As our Staff Accountant, you'll own billing and accounts receivable for a marketplace that fills hundreds of thousands of K-12 classroom absences each year, reporting to the Accounting Manager on a small, remote finance team. Billing is the core of the role: weekly invoicing, daily cash application, credit memos, and collections with school districts. On a team this size, you'll also contribute to the monthly close, revenue recognition, financial reporting, and our annual audit, with the potential to expand more broadly. You'll learn how a finance function runs end to end rather than just one slice of it. You'll work directly with finance leadership and help reshape how billing and close get done. Keys to Success in This Role

• Full-cycle billing and AR ownership: You've run billing and AR yourself, not just supported it. Here you'll invoice district and charter customers every week, apply payments daily (including checks that cover several invoices with no remittance advice), and keep the open-invoice list accurate to the penny.
• Collections that strengthen relationships: You can collect a past-due balance and leave the customer happier than before. School districts run on POs and board approvals, so you'll often work through problems like a PO that has run out mid-year, and find a way forward instead of just sending reminders.
• Sound judgment on disputes: You can tell a genuine billing dispute from a stalling tactic. When a district disputes charges because a substitute left early or didn't show, you'll confirm the facts with Support, decide whether a credit is warranted and for how much, and issue it correctly.
• Close fundamentals: You're comfortable with journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for cash, revenue, AR, and deferred revenue. You'll book accruals for substitute days worked but not yet invoiced and record district deposits and prepayments as deferred revenue, recognizing it as substitute days are worked. You'll help prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financials. 
• Juggling deadlines without dropping details: Weekly billing cycles, month-end close, and audit requests often land in the same week. You prioritize well, meet deadlines, and still catch the duplicate payment or the invoice that doesn't tie out.
• A builder's instinct for process: When you see a manual, repetitive step, you start thinking about how to automate or simplify it. You'll have room to improve how we handle remittances, track PO balances, and run close, and to document it so it sticks.
• Tools and background are a plus: Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills are essential. Experience with QuickBooks Online, Ordway, or Ramp, prior startup experience (especially at a tech-enabled marketplace or service business), and progress toward a CPA license are all a plus. You may also help with accounts payable as needed.
