DESCRIPTION:
At Thermo Fisher Scientific, we're seeking a Sr Staff Architect to guide software architecture excellence across our scientific instruments and platforms. You'll help determine the technical direction of essential solutions that enable our customers to make discoveries in healthcare, life sciences, and advanced materials research. Working with diverse teams, you'll architect scalable, secure, and innovative software solutions that power scientific instruments and cloud platforms.
As a technical leader, you'll define architectural standards, evaluate emerging technologies, and support development teams while ensuring alignment with business objectives. You'll collaborate with product management to translate complex customer requirements into effective technical solutions that advance scientific discovery. This role offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully at the intersection of software innovation and scientific advancement.
What you'll do:
Own the software architecture and technical roadmap for the Microarray Instrument software and Analysis applications.
Define software component boundaries, interfaces, data flows, and integration strategies across instrument hardware, firmware, applications, and cloud components.
Translate product, user, and operational needs into architecture requirements for performance, reliability, data integrity, security, usability, maintainability, and serviceability.
Guide architecture for instrument control and connected software, including acquisition and analysis workflows, user and service applications, APIs, and data management.
Design cloud services on AWS for product needs such as device connectivity, messaging, storage, data processing, and analysis services. Select services based on software requirements and constraints.
Lead architecture reviews, document key decisions and tradeoffs, and help teams break down complex technical problems into implementable work.
Work closely with software, firmware, systems, assay, and other engineering teams to resolve cross-system design issues.
Guide software design, implementation, and integration. Partner with systems and test teams on verification, performance, failure handling, recovery, and product readiness.
Support development with technical reviews, prototypes, code contributions, and investigation of complex issues when needed.
Partner with quality, security, manufacturing, and service teams to address product risks, production needs, product support, and lifecycle changes.
Identify and architect generative AI capabilities for customer-facing applications, including experiences connected to instrument workflows, data, analysis, or support.
Guide AI features from discovery and prototyping through production, integrating models with product data and services as appropriate. Establish evaluation, privacy, security, access control, human review, monitoring, and fallback practices.
Work with teams across the organization to identify, prioritize, and deliver AI-enabled tools and workflows that improve internal productivity in areas such as engineering, service, support, quality, and knowledge access.
Define ways to assess whether AI features are useful, reliable, and safe for their intended use, and use feedback and performance data to guide improvements.
Coach engineers and technical leads, share architecture practices, and contribute to invention disclosures and intellectual property when appropriate.
Basic qualifications:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
8+ years of software engineering experience, including demonstrated ownership of software architecture for complex products.
Experience designing and delivering software that integrates with instruments, embedded or edge systems, hardware, or other physical products.
Experience designing cloud-connected applications or services on AWS, including architecture decisions involving data storage, messaging, APIs, and security.
Strong hands-on experience with C# and Microsoft .NET, plus hands-on experience with C and/or C++, JavaScript/TypeScript, AngularJS, Python, Java for native, embedded, or instrument-facing components.
Experience defining software interfaces and working through integration across multiple components or engineering teams.
Experience with software delivery practices such as source control, code review, automated testing, build and release systems, and CI/CD.
Experience designing or delivering generative AI capabilities for customer-facing software applications and applying AI to improve internal workflows or productivity.
Understanding of the architecture and operational considerations for AI applications, including data grounding, output evaluation, privacy, security, reliability, and ongoing monitoring.
Ability to communicate architecture decisions clearly and guide teams through technical tradeoffs.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with microarray systems, laboratory automation, scientific instruments, diagnostics, or other complex connected products.
Experience in one or more relevant areas such as instrument control, embedded Linux, real-time systems, robotics, motion control, imaging, image processing, and optics.
Experience with containers, serverless services, or microservices, and the judgment to choose patterns that fit product requirements.
Experience with product development in a quality-managed or regulated environment, including risk management, design controls, and requirements traceability where applicable.
Experience supporting products through manufacturing, deployment, field service, and ongoing maintenance.
Contributions to patents, technical publications, open-source projects, or technical communities.
