Impact of a Software Engineer

As a Software Engineer at Upsun, you will build and maintain the backend services behind our customers' billing. Billing is your main focus: invoices, taxes, usage reporting, and the integrations that connect our platform to the commercial systems behind it. These systems handle tens of millions in revenue each year across multiple products, entities, and currencies. Accuracy matters, and your work reaches customers directly.

You will own components in this space and act as a key link between engineering, Finance, and Product. Every new offering Upsun launches needs a billing component, and you will help build it. Over time, you will become a long-term owner of the systems you build. You may also contribute to adjacent services such as project provisioning and account management.

What to expect

• Build billing integrations: Develop and maintain backend services and API integrations in Go that connect our platform to external billing systems.

• Ship usage-based billing features: Build features such as usage tracking, estimates, usage alerts, and invoicing. Work with other engineering teams to understand how new features are measured and charged.

• Complete billing migrations: Help finish moving billing to external systems while keeping data accurate and customers unaffected.

• Troubleshoot and fix issues: Investigate and resolve billing issues raised by Support and Finance, from incorrect usage data to failed integrations.

• Protect customers and data: Contribute to anti-abuse measures and keep security in mind when working with sensitive customer and payment data.

• Work across teams: Partner with Finance, Product, and Support, and communicate clearly and asynchronously with a team spread across Europe, North America, and India.

• Build with good practice: Write tested, well-documented code, take part in pair programming and code review, and use AI-assisted tools thoughtfully in your workflow.

What you bring

• Go development experience: 3+ years of professional backend development in Go.

• Relational databases: Hands-on experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL/MariaDB.

• Third-party API integration: Experience integrating with external REST APIs, including handling errors, retries, and rate limits.

• Care for accuracy: Attention to detail in systems where a mistake can reach a customer's invoice, and an interest in concepts like idempotency and consistency in distributed systems.

• Testing and reliability: A habit of writing unit and integration tests, including for failure paths, and thinking about how your code behaves in production.

• Security awareness: An understanding of common security vulnerabilities and how to avoid them in backend services.

• Interest in billing: You enjoy working on billing and financial systems and want to make them your focus.

• Clear async communication: You write clearly and collaborate well across teams and time zones.
