Job Description:

The John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering seeks a Simulationist to support the development and delivery of healthcare simulation and experiential learning programs across Shufeldt School and its clinical, community, and external partners. 


The Simulationist combines simulation operations, technology, and educational support to translate learning objectives into reliable simulation experiences. The position supports the full lifecycle of simulation activities, including planning, scenario preparation, setup, simulator programming, event execution, troubleshooting, reset, and continuous improvement. 


Simulationists work closely with faculty, simulation educators, standardized patient staff, technical personnel, and operations leadership and support multiple simulation modalities, including patient simulators, procedural trainers, standardized patients, audiovisual systems, virtual and extended reality, and emerging AI-enabled simulation technologies.

Salary Range: $51,000.00 to $65,000.00; DOE 

Essential Duties:


Simulation Operations

  • Prepare, operate, and reset simulation-based learning activities. 
  • Translate faculty-developed scenarios and learning objectives into executable simulation events. 
  • Program and operate patient simulators and associated physiological software. 
  • Support procedural, high-fidelity, standardized patient, hybrid, immersive, and team-based simulations. 
  • Conduct technical checks and scenario rehearsals before simulation activities. 
  • Provide real-time technical and operational support during simulation events. 
  • Participate in learner orientation, prebriefing, facilitation, and debriefing as appropriate to training and role. 
  • Support formative and summative simulation-based assessments, including OSCEs and clinical competency assessments. 
  • Troubleshoot operational and technical problems during simulation events.

Simulation Environment and Scenario Preparation 

  • Prepare realistic clinical environments, equipment, supplies, simulated medications, task trainers, props, electronic health record (EHR) and other scenario materials. 
  • Perform moulage and other techniques required for scenario realism. 
  • Develop standardized setup, reset, and teardown procedures. 
  • Maintain scenario documentation, equipment requirements, setup instructions, and operational notes. 
  • Ensure simulation environments are prepared consistently across learner groups. 


Simulation Technology
 

  • Operate and support simulation technologies, including: 
    • Patient simulators 
    • Procedural and task trainers 
    • Audiovisual capture and debriefing systems 
    • Clinical monitors and simulated medical devices 
    • Simulation management platforms 
    • Electronic health record simulation 
    • VR, AR, and XR technologies 
    • Virtual and tele-simulation platforms 
    • AI-enabled simulation and assessment technologies 
  • Configure simulation computers, peripherals, displays, and associated software. 
  • Troubleshoot simulation equipment and technology and escalate complex issues when necessary. 
  • Assist with implementation and testing of new simulation technologies.

Equipment and Resource Management 

  • Perform routine inspection, preventive maintenance, cleaning, functional testing, and software updates for simulation equipment. 
  • Maintain equipment service and maintenance records. 
  • Support inventory, asset tracking, supply management, and equipment lifecycle planning. 
  • Maintain appropriate levels of simulation supplies. 
  • Assist with evaluation and acquisition of simulation equipment and technology. 


Faculty and Curriculum Support
 

  • Collaborate with Shufeldt faculty and simulation educators to operationalize simulation activities.
  • Advise faculty regarding available simulation technologies and operational requirements. 
  • Assist with scenario development, programming, testing, and refinement. 
  • Orient faculty to simulation equipment and technologies. 
  • Participate in pilot testing and improvement of simulation activities. 
  • Provide operational feedback regarding workflow, technology performance, and learner experience. 

Assessment and Data Support 

  • Support reliable administration of simulation-based assessments. 
  • Maintain consistent simulation conditions across learners and testing sessions. 
  • Operate audiovisual and performance-capture systems used for assessment and debriefing. 
  • Support collection of simulation utilization and performance data. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of learner and assessment information. 

Immersive and Emerging Technologies 

  • Support implementation of virtual patients, extended reality, AI-enabled simulation, digital environments, and automated assessment technologies. 
  • Collaborate with immersive learning, educational technology, and technical teams on simulation projects. 
  • Participate in testing and implementation of new simulation platforms and experiences.

Center Operations 

  • Support simulation programs for ASU Health, clinical partners, workforce programs, continuing education, and external organizations. 
  • Assist with scheduling, event preparation, equipment movement, and operational coordination.
  • Support mobile and in-situ simulation at clinical and community locations. 
  • Assist with Center tours, demonstrations, and special events. 
  • Maintain professional interactions with learners, faculty, clinical partners, vendors, and external clients. 


Quality and Safety
 

  • Participate in simulation quality-improvement activities. 
  • Document technical failures and corrective actions. 
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of simulation standard operating procedures. 
  • Support a physically and psychologically safe learning environment. 

Other Duties

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. 
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, clinicians, learners, and external partners. 
  • Other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare, education, simulation, engineering, information technology, audiovisual technology, biomedical technology, or related field
  • Two or more years of healthcare simulation experience.
  • Experience operating patient simulators and simulation technologies.
  • Experience with audiovisual recording and debriefing systems.
  • Experience with procedural, standardized patient, hybrid, or high-fidelity simulation.
  • Experience in a clinical healthcare environment.
  • Experience with VR, AR, XR, virtual simulation, or AI-enabled educational technologies.
  • Experience supporting OSCEs or other performance-based assessments.
  • Experience with mobile or in-situ simulation.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS®), Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE®), or comparable certification.
  • Ability to obtain CHSOS certification after meeting eligibility requirements.
  • Experience in healthcare simulation, clinical education, healthcare technology, experiential education, audiovisual technology, information technology, or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and operate complex technology. 
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions

Professional Development


  • Simulationists are expected to maintain current knowledge of healthcare simulation practices and technologies. Professional development may include participation in simulation professional organizations, conferences, vendor training, and institutional development programs. 
  • Simulationists who do not hold CHSOS certification at hire are encouraged to pursue certification after meeting eligibility requirements.

Working Environment:


  • In-person position within healthcare simulation and clinical skills environments.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent physical demands may include stooping, bending, crawling under/around objects, reaching, lifting and pushing and movement of simulation equipment and supplies of varying weights up to 25 pounds (medium)
  • May require occasional early morning, evening, or weekend work.
  • Requires ability to safely move and position patient simulators and clinical equipment.
  • May require travel between ASU campuses, clinical partner locations, and community sites.
