The Team:

The Engine Orchestration team builds and operates the distributed services that run, scale and balance the analytical query engines. We are the layer that turns a customer's model into something they and their AI agents can query interactively using our Process Query Language across enterprise-sized datasets.

The team actively evolves our new premium query engine, collaborating with multiple other teams across time zones. New features, improved operationability, robust security, and allowing for scalable customer workloads are ours to design and ship.

Our defining program right now is a multi-year migration of the query engine that has powered Celonis for years onto our new premium query engine. It is one of the largest and highest-leverage engineering efforts in the company.

The Role:

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead both the engineering that evolves the new premium query engine and the execution of milestones within the migration program that moves customer workloads onto it.

This is not a lift and shift. The two query engines evolved with different focus areas and the new premium query engine serves different forward looking use cases, so the job is keeping customer workloads running seamlessly throughout. You will analyze how the engines differ on real customer workloads, develop tooling, classify the root causes, and turn them into concrete follow up actions across teams.

Continuous operations are a crucial part of your job. You will help keep the engines and their orchestration healthy while the entire fleet moves underneath them, because a migration on this scale does not get a pause in customer traffic to work with.

The work you’ll do:

• Lead the design and delivery of the services our team owns across new and existing microservices in Java, Spring, RabbitMQ and Postgres, from architecture through to production operation
• Evolve the new premium query engine by owning and delivering entire feature sets addressing new and extended use cases, tightened security robustness, and closing gaps
• Drive query engine migration milestones end to end and ensure operationability across  their shared libraries as dependency workflows grow more frequent and complex
• Establish and extend AI agent tooling to carry repetitive operational and development processes across our team
• Sustain the operational and security robustness of our Tier 0 and Tier 1 services throughout feature development and the migration, and take part and improve how the on-call rotation works

The qualifications you need:

• University degree in Computer Science or comparable education
• 5+ years of professional experience building Java applications that are scalable, reliable and testable, including owning it in production
• Fluency in Java and Python is required
• Strong experience with data-intensive, performance-critical distributed systems
• Experience rolling out changes across a large fleet of distributed systems, and the instinct for incremental, reversible, measurable steps that comes with it
• A track record of developing and operating systems that process data workloads at scale
• Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms from a performance point of view, and of asynchronous and concurrent programming
• Ability to turn a vague, customer-facing problem into a concrete executable plan, and to explain that plan to stakeholders who are not engineers
• Excellent communication skills in English, German is a plus
• Preferred experience: Java Spring Boot, Kubernetes, Databases, C++
