Summary

The Senior Marketing Manager is the dedicated marketing leader for the Shadow Mountain imprint within Deseret Book Marketing. You'll own end-to-end consumer marketing strategy for Shadow Mountain's ∼50-title annual catalog  developing per-title and per-span campaign plans, coordinating a team of specialists across publicity, events, social media, and advertising, and serving as the connective tissue between Shadow Mountain's editorial vision and Deseret Book's corporate marketing capabilities.

Responsibilities

Marketing Strategy & Campaign Management

  • Develop, execute, and report on the Shadow Mountain marketing strategy annually and per publishing span (Spring/Fall).
  • Build per-title marketing plans: grade each book by priority, allocate budget and time, define tactics, set KPIs, and track results.
  • Present marketing plans to the Shadow Mountain team for editorial alignment and author feedback before execution.
  • Coordinate with the DB Marketing Director on shared resources, co-branded campaigns, and cross-imprint promotions.
  • Ensure Shadow Mountain's brand identity is clearly differentiated from Deseret Book's house brand while leveraging DB's infrastructure.

Team Leadership

  • Manage four specialists (Publicity, Events, Social Media, Advertising); run weekly standups and manage workflows in Asana.
  • Set individual goals tied to title and span performance; conduct regular performance check-ins.
  • Serve as primary escalation point for day-to-day marketing execution decisions.

Budget Ownership & Reporting

  • Own and manage the Shadow Mountain consumer marketing budget covering publicity, events, social media, advertising, and email.
  • Track expenses at the title level; reconcile actuals against plan monthly.
  • Deliver monthly performance reports to both the DB Marketing Director and the Associate Publisher/Publisher covering campaign ROI, channel performance, budget utilization, and recommendations.
  • Produce per-span campaign recaps with lessons learned and forward-looking adjustments.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Serve as the marketing voice in Shadow Mountain's New Product Review (NPR) process — providing market intelligence, comp analysis, and positioning recommendations.
  • Collaborate with the Author Relations Specialist to ensure campaigns reflect author needs, feedback, and availability.
  • Work with DB Partner Sales to align marketing with sell-in timelines, distributor advertising, and retail merchandising.
  • Coordinate with creative/design resources for all marketing collateral; provide briefs, review proofs, ensure brand consistency.
  • Leverage Deseret Book's infrastructure (email lists, website, retail channels, social following, CRM) to amplify Shadow Mountain campaigns.

Title Positioning & Content

  • Provide input on metadata worksheets (BISACs, comps, KSPs) for all Shadow Mountain titles.
  • Oversee consumer-facing marketing copy across email, ads, social, and catalog descriptions.
  • Coordinate book launch strategies across publicity, events, and paid/organic campaigns.

Event Support

  • Provide strategic oversight for Shadow Mountain's event marketing calendar; approve event-level marketing plans.
  • Attend key events as needed to represent the marketing perspective.

Qualifications

  • 5–7 years of progressive experience in book publishing marketing, consumer marketing, or brand management; imprint-level marketing leadership strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute multi-channel campaigns with measurable results.
  • Experience managing a small team of specialists (3–5 people) with a track record of developing talent.
  • Strong analytical skills; comfortable with campaign ROI analysis, budget management, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration; able to navigate matrix reporting (corporate marketing + imprint editorial) with clarity and diplomacy.
  • Familiarity with book publishing workflows, seasonal catalog cycles, and trade marketing conventions.
  • Experience with Asana, MailChimp, social media platforms, and marketing analytics tools.
  • Strong written communication skills; able to write compelling marketing copy and present strategy clearly.
  • Familiarity with children's, MG, YA, and/or faith-based book markets preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field required.
