Senior Engineering Manager, Index Build


Key Functions:

As a Senior Engineering Manager in Benchmark & Index Management, the individual will be responsible for leading globally distributed engineering teams delivering and operating business-critical technology platforms supporting index management and operational workflows.

The role combines engineering leadership, technical and architectural oversight, delivery accountability and people development. The candidate will work closely with Product, Operations, Index Delivery & Management, Architecture and Technology partners to deliver strategic capabilities, modernize existing platforms and continuously improve engineering quality, resilience and effectiveness.


Key Responsibilities:

·         Hands-on engineering leader who builds and scales globally distributed teams, driving the development of resilient, high-performance platforms that enable the end-to-end index lifecycle while partnering with Product and Operations to deliver commercial outcomes

·         Owns the end-to-end engineering delivery of scalable, resilient, secure and highly available technology solutions supporting index management and operational workflows

·         Provides technical and architectural direction for new capabilities, platform modernization and complex engineering decisions

·         Ensures solutions are designed and delivered in line with agreed engineering standards for maintainability, scalability, security, performance and operational resilience

·         Drives the modernisation of legacy platforms and adoption of cloud-native architecture where this provides clear business and technology benefit

·         Establishes and continuously improves engineering practices covering software design, coding standards, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, security and automation

·         Ensures appropriate testing and quality controls are embedded throughout the software delivery lifecycle

·         Guides teams in the effective design and implementation of APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, data processing solutions and enterprise integrations

·         Drives the responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering, Generative AI, agentic AI and intelligent automation where these can improve engineering productivity, software quality, user experience or operational efficiency

·         Partners with Product Managers, Operations, Index Delivery & Management, Architecture, UX and other stakeholders to translate business priorities into pragmatic technology solutions and delivery plans

·         Balances strategic transformation and new capability delivery with the reliability, support and continued evolution of existing business-critical platforms

·         Communicates technical strategy, delivery progress, risks and complex engineering decisions clearly and effectively to technical and non-technical audiences

·         Builds a high-performing engineering culture centered on ownership, accountability, collaboration, engineering excellence and continuous improvement

·         Mentors and develops engineers, technical leads and engineering managers, strengthening technical capability, leadership depth and succession across the organization


Experience & Skills:

·         15+ years of extensive proven experience in software engineering, including the design, development and operation of large-scale, business-critical applications in an enterprise environment

·         Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams responsible for complex technology products and platforms

·         Strong technical depth with the ability to provide credible architectural guidance and challenge engineering decisions constructively

·         Strong experience designing scalable, high-performance, data-intensive applications, data processing solutions and ETL/ELT pipelines

·        Strong knowledge of database modelling, design, performance tuning and optimization, with hands-on experience in relational database platforms such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL or similar, including SQL development and query optimization.

• Strong software engineering experience with object-oriented programming languages such as C#, .NET, Java, Python or similar, including the design and implementation of APIs, distributed systems, and microservices architectures.

• Experience delivering modern web applications using frameworks such as Angular, React, or comparable UI technologies, with a solid understanding of JavaScript, HTML, CSS and modern application design principles

·         Strong understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure and native services, including RDS, EC2, EKS/ECS, Lambda, SQS, SNS, API Gateway and AWS Glue

·         Strong understanding of API design, microservices, event-driven architecture and enterprise integration patterns

·         Extensive experience with modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, observability and automation

·         Strong understanding of software security, performance, scalability, resilience and production support considerations

·         Experience modernizing legacy applications and migrating or evolving platforms towards modern cloud-based architecture

·         Practical understanding of AI-assisted software engineering and intelligent automation, including appropriate security, governance and control considerations

·         Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex business and technical requirements into pragmatic solutions

·         Experience working in agile delivery environments with a focus on collaboration, automation and continuous improvement

·         Experience working effectively across Product, Architecture, Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, Delivery Management and Technology Governance functions

·         Experience within Financial Markets, ideally Equities, Fixed Income, Index Management or related financial services technology

·         Experience with Java, including Spring Boot, and/or Python for integrations, greenfield development or legacy systems is advantageous

·         Familiarity with Sybase and PostgreSQL is advantageous

·         Experience with workflow orchestration or Business Process Management technologies such as IBM BAW or Camunda is advantageous
