Major Tasks and Responsibilities of Position 

The Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and modeling relationships between diverse data types across various application areas, e.g., production, R&D, procurement, SCM, sales/marketing, and finance. 

The Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for conducting both exploratory and complex data analyses using methods and tools of statistical modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. 

Furthermore, the Senior Data Scientist will define strategies and roadmaps for the creation, visualization, and operationalization of reusable analytical models and the required end-to-end processes from prototyping to scaling in production. 

The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for translating requirements into prototypes and MVPs while simultaneously populating and maintaining AAA’s use case pipeline, including evaluating individual use cases based on dimensions of importance, urgency, feasibility, and financial impact. 

The Senior Data Scientist will validate the analyses and analytical models of less senior colleagues and support and train them in all aspects of data science, tools, and frameworks.  

The Senior Data Scientist will create requirements to actively influence the data processing architecture and technologies used in close coordination with Data Engineering, and also obtain, assess, and evaluate offers from external solution providers. 

The Senior Data Scientist serves as company-wide point of contact for data science questions and support management as Technical Lead. 

The Senior Data scientist supports and helps to supervise external data scientists (contractors) working for Covestro – conducting model and code reviews. 

The Senior Data Scientist will actively search for and evaluate various AI tools and methods to improve the modeling process in respect to quality and speed. 

Qualifications 

• University degree (preferably Diploma, Master's or PhD) in Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field 

• 7+ years of experience in the data science environment, ideally in an international setting and with virtual teams 

• Experience with Machine Learning frameworks such as sklearn, H2O, TensorFlow, and OpenCV, and ideally with deep learning 

• Experience with SQL and noSQL databases and programming languages such as Python or R 

• Interest to work in various business domains. 

• Ability to see and create solutions for business issues. 

• Fluency with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude code, …) and different Auto-ML tools. 

• Experience managing and working together with external partners and suppliers 

• Entrepreneurial perspective and enjoy working on a variety of different challenges 

• Open-minded personality and are an approachable team player 

• Enjoy working in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment

•  Fluent in Chinese and English and can present complex technical and business concepts clearly and convincingly to various stakeholders
