Job Description:
Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.
As a Senior Data Scientist in the FDE team, you are the embedded, trusted technical partner for one of bp's Upstream operating regions — owning the delivery of data science and AI solutions to the business's hardest, highest-value problems, end-to-end. You bring deep technical expertise and domain intimacy, set the standard for how we build, challenge the business to surface the real problem, and mentor others in the team. Operating with autonomy, you follow through between problem and working solution in days rather than quarters, engineer for scale from day one, and champion a business domain field that connects your region into the wider Digital Delivery organisation. Your job is to turn data into decisions — and to deepen the trust and value the forward-deployed model depends on.
What you will do:
- Act as the embedded, “go-to” technical partner for a region, owning end-to-end delivery of high-value data science and AI solutions from discovery through to an adopted, production-ready outcome.
- Lead the rapid design and build of proofs-of-concept on live data, engineered for scale from day one, setting the bar for quality, documentation and AI governance.
- Apply advanced data science, machine learning and AI engineering to deliver significant, quantified business value across the region.
- Build deep domain expertise and use it to challenge business requests, shape requirements and re-apply reusable patterns that strengthen bp's wider digital capability.
- Champion a business domain field as the single point of contact into the relevant Digital Delivery vertical — aligning before build and securing a clear route to sustain.
- Mentor and coach less-experienced data scientists and business users, lifting technical fluency and driving adoption across the region.
What you will bring (essential):
- Demonstrated' hands-on experience delivering end-to-end data science, machine learning and AI solutions with proven business impact in complex, fast-paced environments.
- A degree in a quantitative field (advanced degree desirable) or equivalent practical experience.
- Expert programming skills in Python and SQL, with a track record of building, deploying and sustaining models and data pipelines.
- A demonstrated ability to own solutions end-to-end and work autonomously when embedded with the business — internalising complexity (data quality, process, adoption) rather than handing it off.
- Excellent partner and influencing skills, and a track record of being the trusted technical partner to a business.
- Experience mentoring others and advocating for data science, engineering and AI governance practices.
- A continuous-learning attitude, using AI tooling to punch far beyond weight and accelerate delivery.
Nice to have:
- Experience with Palantir Foundry (Ontology, AIP) — preferred, but this can be built in role through the Foundry Fellowship and on-the-job coaching.
- Experience with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Copilot) and modern MLOps / productionisation practice.
- Breadth across the wider engineering stack (data engineering, software engineering, AI engineering, product thinking), in line with the FDE model.
- Domain knowledge in an operational Upstream environment (production, operations, maintenance & reliability, wells, subsurface or procurement).
- No prior experience in the energy industry is required.
This role is open to Azerbaijani citizenship applications only.
Why join us:
This is a role for a senior practitioner who wants to stay deeply hands-on while shaping how a region delivers with data and AI. You'll own real problems for real users, set the technical standard, and mentor a growing team — all with the autonomy of the forward-deployed model and the leverage of AI tooling behind you.
