About the Role

As Senior Employment Counsel, you will provide pragmatic day-to-day employment law advice in order to unblock business needs, mitigate risk, and incorporate best employment compliance practices throughout the company. You’ll play a critical role in building and upholding Nuro’s culture and helping prepare Nuro for the challenges and opportunities of launching a commercial product. This role will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer and serve as a key partner to the People team and business leaders, providing the legal, strategic, and operational framework to support an expanding global workforce.  

About the Work

• As the head of Nuro’s employment law function, you will be the owner of the company’s employment practices, actively seeking out opportunities to add value and strengthen the day-to-day activities of our People and Operations teams. You will advise on best practices and risk mitigation for the entire employee life-cycle (from recruiting to separation).
• You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that our employment policies, practices and programs are legally sound and best in class. You will  and maintain employment templates, policies, and training. 
• You’ll also be the primary point of contact for any employment pre-litigation and litigation matters, including any agency charges (DLSE, EEOC, DOL, CDR, etc.), discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, settlement negotiations, and trial/arbitration strategies, and you will help supervise and direct outside counsel support as necessary. 
• You will partner closely with the People and Operations team to assist in the scaling of Nuro’s non-exempt workforce, including wage and hour compliance, drug testing regulations, and terminations.
• You will own the employment legal and operation strategy for international growth and mobility issues, including to the EU, Asia, and Canada.
• You will partner closely on internal investigations and employee relations matters, including processes and policies and recommendations.
• You will support and advise on a wide variety of cross-functional areas, including leaves of absences and accommodations, performance management, contingent workers, compensation, privacy, immigration, and export control compliance.

About You

You are an experienced attorney  who brings strategic thinking, strong program management, and a bias toward action and:

• You’re experienced. You have 7+ years of combined law firm and in-house experience focused on employment law, including extensive experience in California. Experience scaling a fast growing company nationally and internationally is a plus. Experience at private and public companies is a plus.
• You’re renowned for your judgment. You have a proven combination of great legal instincts and business acumen. You’re comfortable making the big calls regarding legal risk.  
• You thrive in fast-paced environments, expertly juggling multiple tasks. You’re excited about working at an AV company operating on public roads across the globe and pride yourself on just getting stuff done - clearing the way for the business to move fast and scale. 
• You see opportunity in ambiguity. You have experience in spaces where law and regulation is ambiguous, unarticulated, or entirely absent.  You are able to identify not just requirements for compliance, but opportunities to lead and define best practices.
• You know how to engage with teams and their leaders. You are expert in helping other team leaders deliver on their priorities on account of your practical approach to providing legal advice and hustle.
• You’re a fast and precise writer. You are comfortable taking first pen on documents in a range of legal and compliance contexts; able to tailor your writing to audiences; and quickly produce written product that is polished and ready for commercial, public, government, or other external consumption.
• You care deeply about impact. You are passionate that your work makes a significant impact on the lives of millions of people — and recognize the responsibility that comes with it.
• You are technically proficient, and at least as comfortable working with modern tools like AI as you are working manually.
• You’re a member of the California Bar. Admission in other jurisdictions is also a plus.

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $193,930 and $291,150 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
