SUMMARY:

  The role plays a key role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment across Rochester Regional Health facilities. Responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas, monitoring facility access, assisting patients and visitors, and responding to both routine and emergency situations. Officers are expected to deter aggression, enforce safety protocols, and communicate effectively with diverse populations. This position requires professionalism under pressure and a strong commitment to customer service and public safety.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Maintain a highly visible command presence and act as a visual deterrent to active aggression.

• Properly handles routine and emergency incidents detrimental to the security and safety of the facility, patients, staff and employees.

• Monitors access to Rochester Regional Health facilities through the admittance process; assists visitors with a legitimate need to gain entry to the facility; observes screening of patients, visitors and client employees to ensure they are conducted in a proficient manner in order to expedite their admittance to the facility, as needed and when prescribed.

• Provides an atmosphere in which all Rochester Regional Health employees and visitors know that RRH responds to and cares about their needs; provides a courteous, respectful and pleasant interaction with each employee and visitor as perceived from their point of view; presents a good image of RRH and its security and safety department.

• Maintains and displays good public relations skills when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff.

• Communicates in a manner that is open, honest and responsive in all situations; to the extent authorized, provides information regarding the facility and surrounding area as requested by visitors.

• Monitors entrances and exits; prevents unapproved or unlawful entry; controls entrances, the movement of people and; in a calm manner directs persons who cause a disturbance to leave the property.

• Patrols assigned post on foot; checks for unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, security violations, blocked ingress and egress, mechanical problems, and unauthorized persons; inspects buildings and grounds using appropriate equipment and protective gear.

• Protects evidence or scene of incident in the event of accidents, emergencies, or security investigations; sets up barriers and signage, and provides direction or information to others.

• Responds to incidents of violence or similar conditions following procedures established for post, by Rochester Regional Health, or through training or certification.

• Recognizes and promptly requests additional assistance as needed utilizing radio, phone or personnel operating in proximity to an event or incident.

• Age-Related Competency: Has demonstrated knowledge of and competence in age-related patient care, as defined and documented in the facility standards.

• Must maintain the highest standards of personal grooming and appearance. Strictly adhering to company uniform standards.

• Identifies and reports real or potential hazards in the environment.

• Exercises limited law enforcement authority under New York State Criminal Procedure Law, including powers of arrest, detention, and issuance of appearance tickets when appropriate.

• Responds to incidents involving criminal behavior or behavioral health crises with the authority to detain, arrest, or initiate protective custody procedures in accordance with NYS law.

• Authorized to carry and deploy defensive tools in compliance with NYS regulations.

• Conducts lawful searches and seizures within the scope of Peace Officer authority, ensuring proper documentation and chain of custody.

• Provides secure transport and custody of individuals under legal hold, including those subject to mental health evaluations or protective custody orders.

• Participates in joint investigations and emergency operations with law enforcement agencies, exercising legal powers granted under Peace Officer designation.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent (Team Members hired into the role effective 5/17/26 are exempt from the stated education requirements)

• 6 months experience in Law Enforcement, Corrections, Military, or Security

• Eligible to be designated as a Peace Officer by Rochester Regional Health and eligible to be registered with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as a Peace Officer

• Valid NYS Driver’s License.

• Must have a valid NYS Pistol Permit. (Within 18 months of successful completion of the Peace officer Academy)

• NYS Security Guard Act License (OR) Registered as a Police or Peace Officer in NYS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Heavy - This category includes physically intensive work such as lifting heavy materials (up to 100 lbs.), climbing ladders, crawling into tight spaces, and working on uneven, slippery, or elevated surfaces. Employees must demonstrate strong motor coordination, balance, and spatial awareness to safely operate tools and equipment. High visual and auditory alertness is required, especially in areas with moving machinery. Emotional demands are moderate, focusing on hazard recognition, task accuracy, and adherence to safety standards. Environmental exposures may include extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, loud noise, and mechanical hazards. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and periodic physical examinations are often required.

PAY RANGE:

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
