The Contents Cleaner is responsible for cleaning, deodorizing, and restoring customer belongings once they arrive at the contents processing facility. This role focuses on the hands-on cleaning and restoration process; contents packing, inventorying, and customer pack-out/pack-back responsibilities are handled by the Contents Technician.
The Contents Cleaner uses the appropriate tools, techniques, and cleaning solutions for each item type to restore belongings as close to pre-loss condition as possible, and inspects completed work for quality before it moves on for storage or return. This role supports the broader Contents team by keeping the cleaning area organized and equipment well maintained, and coordinating closely with the Contents Technician and Lead Contents Project Manager to keep work moving efficiently.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Cleaning & Restoration
● Clean, deodorize, and restore household and personal items using appropriate techniques, tools, and cleaning solutions for each item type.
● Operate specialized cleaning equipment, such as ultrasonic cleaners, ozone machines, and air scrubbers, as needed.
● Assess incoming items for damage type and determine the appropriate cleaning or restoration method.
● Identify items that cannot be fully restored and flag them for review.
Quality & Documentation
● Inspect completed work to confirm it meets Merit's quality standards before items move on for storage or return.
● Document the condition of items before and after cleaning as directed.
● Complete a daily log of work performed.
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
● Maintain a clean, organized, and safe cleaning area within the contents processing facility.
● Perform routine maintenance and upkeep on cleaning equipment and tools.
● Follow proper procedures for the use and storage of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
Teamwork & Communication
● Communicate and coordinate with the Contents Technician and Lead Contents Project Manager to keep work moving efficiently.
● Follow daily work assignments and priorities as directed.
Requirements
● High school diploma or GED.
● Prior cleaning, housekeeping, or restoration experience preferred; on-the-job training provided.
● Ability to safely and effectively work with a variety of cleaning chemicals, solutions, and specialized equipment.
● Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
● Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
● Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and document work as directed.
● IICRC certification in contents or textile cleaning is a plus, though not required for this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
● The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
● The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
● Work is performed primarily within the company's contents processing facility.
● The employee will be regularly exposed to cleaning chemicals, odors, and items affected by fire, water, smoke, or mold damage, and should follow appropriate safety protocols and use provided personal protective equipment.
● The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
