Job Description:

This position assists a nurse manager in managing daily nursing activities within a nursing department. The role involves providing leadership and performing management functions delegated by the nurse manager, such as resource allocation, ensuring a safe working environment, and optimizing patient care. The position is accountable for developing departmental structure, processes, and outcome standards, typically for one unit. The job duties are distributed as follows: 60% Tactical (day-to-day activities e.g. staffing and equipment availability), 35% Operational (budget management, supply acquisition, and employee performance evaluations), and 5% Strategic (developing goals to meet the Intermountain/Regional Strategic Plan and holding employees accountable to these goals).

Assistant Managers must be in a department that has >100 caregivers and must have direct reports.
Nurse Managers must receive approval if circumstances warrant an assistant manager, but do not meet defined criteria.

Span of control may vary for leaders responsible for complex nursing programs with multi-center or enterprise-wide reach. Variances from established guidelines must be supported by demonstrated program complexity and scope and require iNet approval.

Intermountain Health is hiring a Resource Pool Assistant Nurse Manager to support clinical operations and help lead a dynamic nursing team. This leadership role partners closely with the Nurse Manager to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care while supporting caregivers, managing resources, and driving operational excellence.

About the Role – Resource Pool Assistant Nurse Manager

As a Resource Pool Assistant Nurse Manager, you will report to the Nurse Manager and assist in overseeing nursing operations within the department. This position combines frontline leadership, operational management, and strategic support to ensure exceptional patient outcomes and caregiver engagement.

This role is responsible for supporting staffing and resource allocation, budget oversight, performance management, regulatory compliance, and caregiver development while helping achieve organizational goals.

Workload Distribution:

  • 60% Tactical: Daily operations, staffing, scheduling, and resource management.
  • 35% Operational: Budget oversight, supply management, employee performance evaluations, and workforce planning.
  • 5% Strategic: Supporting goals aligned with the Intermountain and Regional Strategic Plan.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership:

  • Assist the Nurse Manager in maintaining a professional nursing practice environment.

  • Promote safe, effective, and compassionate patient care based on current standards of practice.
  • Serve as a role model in patient care delivery and professional conduct.

Operational & Resource Management:

  • Allocate staffing and resources to meet patient care demands.

  • Support development and management of departmental operating, capital, and personnel budgets.
  • Monitor resource utilization and manage expenses to meet departmental financial goals.

Team Leadership & Engagement:

  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and employee engagement.

  • Support recruitment, hiring, onboarding, retention, and caregiver satisfaction initiatives.
  • Participate in employee coaching, performance reviews, and competency assessments.

Education & Professional Development:

  • Help ensure annual competency verification and ongoing skills development.

  • Provide mentorship and support professional growth opportunities for caregivers.
  • Assist with oversight and coordination of student nurse experiences.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance:

  • Support patient safety initiatives and quality improvement efforts.

  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, DOPL, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with action plans and performance improvement initiatives to achieve department goals.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Facilitate communication between leadership and frontline caregivers.

  • Participate in collaborative decision-making and shared governance activities.
  • Partner with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to achieve clinical, operational, and service objectives.

Patient Experience:

  • Monitor patient satisfaction metrics and support improvement initiatives.

  • Utilize service benchmarks and available data to enhance patient experience outcomes.

Community Engagement:

  • Encourage participation in community outreach efforts, volunteer events, health fairs, and professional organizations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree verification required).

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
    • Compact licenses must be transferred to the state of practice within 60 days of employment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Completion of Intermountain Health leadership development coursework within one year of accepting the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specialty nursing certification.

  • Previous leadership, management, or oversight experience within a healthcare setting.
  • Experience managing teams, staffing functions, and operational workflows.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
