Research Associate 2

The University of Miami/UHealth department of Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Research Associate 2 to work Hybrid in Miami, FL. The Research Associate 2, SOM contributes to the University’s research activities under the supervision of senior staff. Moreover, the incumbent understands, interprets, and complies with research policies and protocols.

• Performs specialized and complex experiments/studies.
• Participates in the publication of significant research results.
• Advances expertise through education, training, and research.
• Writes extramural grants/proposals to gain support when appropriate.
• Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens and tissue cultures.
• Weighs and anesthetizes laboratory animals for experiments.
• Operates sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment.
• Performs calculations to complete research test results.
• Performs photography and dark room processing.
• Participates in training sessions and workshops.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

Performs specialized histology and neuropathology laboratory activities in support of the Brain Endowment Bank (BEB), including tissue processing, slide preparation, immunohistochemical staining, laboratory quality assurance, inventory management, data management, and protocol development. Ensures the accurate processing, documentation, and analysis of brain tissue specimens while maintaining compliance with established laboratory procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. Provides technical support and training to laboratory personnel and contributes to research activities, including manuscript, report, and grant preparation.

• Process brain tissue specimens through fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide preparation using specialized histology equipment and techniques.
• Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment used for tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, slide mounting, and staining procedures.
• Perform routine and advanced histological and immunohistochemical staining procedures, including antibody validation and optimization.
• Analyze and verify laboratory findings and slide quality to ensure accuracy and adherence to quality standards.
• Maintain inventories of antibodies, chemicals, slides, tissue blocks, and laboratory supplies; monitor stock levels and coordinate procurement activities.
• Maintain and update laboratory records, including immunohistochemistry logs, neuropathology logs, and specimen tracking systems.
• Transfer and manage neuropathology data in laboratory databases, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
• Develop, revise, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory protocols to support best practices and regulatory compliance.
• Set up laboratory equipment, instruments, and materials required for specialized procedures and experiments.
• Provide technical guidance, training, and support to laboratory assistants, technicians, and other staff.
• Participate in research activities, including preparation of manuscripts, scientific reports, presentations, and grant applications.
• Support quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure rigorous implementation of laboratory protocols.
• Maintain compliance with institutional policies, confidentiality requirements, ethical standards, and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines.
• Perform other related duties as assigned in support of laboratory and Brain Endowment Bank operations.

Core Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required
