Your Role

Reporting to a producer and a senior editor, you will primarily be responsible for covering general news in Northern Ontario.

You bring a strong pipeline of story ideas and creative ways to tell them. You are comfortable writing, editing and formatting digital news content, and you enjoy being out in the field—especially when covering breaking news under pressure.

You have a solid understanding of Northern Ontario and are attuned to the issues that matter to its communities. You are familiar with economic topics related to the natural resources sector, French-language education, and social justice.

You will produce written, video and audio content for various Radio-Canada platforms, with a focus on digital platforms.

Your work will be governed by Radio-Canada’s journalistic policies, standards, and practices.

This is a permanent, full-time position. The selected candidate may be required to work overtime, and the schedule may vary depending on operational needs.

Please note that this reporter position is fully on-site, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Your responsibilities:

  • Pitch and produce news stories about Northern Ontario, whether in short or long formats, text or visual.
  • Produce multi-platform journalistic content across research, writing, video, audio, and writing to deliver compelling, high-impact stories.
  • Work closely with other team members in news and programming in Sudbury and elsewhere.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with a wide variety of sources and contacts.
  • Provide analysis on news topics.
  • Edit audio and video content to produce reports within established deadlines.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news.
  • Quickly summarize large amounts of complex information under time constraints.

This role requires full-time on-site presence.

Your profile:

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent, and at least three (3) years of recent and relevant experience.
  • Ability to find story ideas and present them to a broad audience from an engaging perspective.
  • Proven professional ethics within diverse teams.
  • Advanced knowledge of key issues affecting Northern Ontario.
  • Experience in validating, reviewing, fact-checking, and formatting news content.
  • Ability to write reports based on interviews gathered or live web events, filling in gaps as needed.
  • Willingness to learn and take on new tasks across all Radio-Canada platforms.
  • Strong journalistic judgment and ability to work effectively under pressure in a newsroom.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong team spirit.
  • Strong commitment to embodying and promoting diversity, inclusion, and respect in the workplace.
  • Ability to develop original, self-directed journalism.
  • A valid driver's license and driving record meeting CBC/Radio-Canada insurer minimum requirements is an important asset.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
  • Knowledge of audio and video editing software is an asset.
  • Excellent command of French (mandatory) and very good knowledge of English (asset).

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
