The Role: Refinery Analyst

The Team: You will be part of a global, dynamic team. Fast-paced, with ever-expanding new ways of researching, analyzing, and managing data, you will perform high-level analytics work and modeling and deliver important content and analytics to our readers.

The Impact: You will function as a subject matter expert on refining operations and economics, work on the global refinery outages, refining database maintenance, and refining process unit economics. You will perform high level analytics work and modeling to form conclusions on refinery operations and provide forecasts, content, and reports.

What’s in it for you: The Refining Industry Analyst will play a key role in providing insight and outlooks within a highly experienced global oil team. They will have the opportunity to work alongside other skilled analysts, helping to form a consistent and comprehensive view of the global refining market. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to increase your analytical skills and knowledge by interacting with other teams and groups within the organization.

Responsibilities:

• Carry out topical research, collect global refinery operations data from various internal and external sources on refinery runs, refinery utilization levels, margins, outages, product yields, and new refining projects.
• Manage data, contribute to the maintenance, updating, and improvement of the World Refinery Database (WRD), and provide forecasts.
• Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze database performance and data accuracy.
• Perform high-level analytics and modeling to draw conclusions about refinery operations and contribute to writing and providing data and charts for Spotlights, the Global Refining Outlook, and other Short-Term and Long-Term reports.
• Collaborate with team members and support with ongoing research deliverables.
• Develop PowerPoint presentations according to business needs.
• Functions as a subject matter expert, explaining the relationship between refinery economics, refinery operations and crude/product prices.
• Responds to client requests/inquiries for data and analysis.
• Use S&P-approved AI tools to automate and enhance workflow productivity

What We’re Looking For:

• BA/BS or MS in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Finance, Business, and/or related field of study. Equivalent experience within their discipline is also considered. Chemical/refining engineering is preferred.
• An S&P Global employee at this level would typically have 3-5 years of relevant experience in refining and commodity markets.
• Previous refinery operational experience is a plus. Knowledge of the global refining industry, refinery processes, refined products from crude, refinery margins, refinery
• complexity and refinery maintenance is a must.
• Designing, building, maintaining, and updating databases and models using SQL, Python, and AI, and managing front-end and back-end data and file management for databases.
• Strong numerical and quantitative analysis skills. Expert status in Microsoft office and advanced Excel. Knowledge of PIMS and/or Spiral software a major plus.
• Displays well-rounded communication skills in English, including strong listening techniques, a clear, concise writing style, and strong verbal skills.
• The ability to communicate across a wide range of groups and personalities, both internally and externally. Public speaking experience is a plus.
• Works well in a team environment, focusing on collaboration and adapting to the needs of a diverse team.
• Adept at managing multiple tasks and adhering to regular deadlines. Able to adjust priorities throughout the day.
• Professional integrity and willingness/desire to cultivate an open mindset andteamwork culture.
