GBH News is a multi-platform local newsroom headquartered in Boston. Our goal — through in-depth, high-quality journalism — is to inform, educate and enlighten our audience. We cover the immediate news of the day as well issues and developments that shape our community and culture. GBH News broadcasts and streams local, national, and international news, produces local talk shows, and publishes a wide variety of locally sourced news online. Through GBH's statewide initiative, Connecting the Commonwealth, we provide expansive coverage from the Cape and Islands through CAI, across Central Massachusetts through our Worcester bureau, and into Western Massachusetts through NEPM. Position Overview
GBH News is seeking a sharp and dependable part-time Radio Producer/Announcer to host evening radio newscasts and help set the news agenda for the following morning's broadcasts within Morning Edition. This role requires a self-starter with excellent news judgment, strong writing skills, and the ability to react quickly and accurately to breaking news.
The ideal candidate is an experienced broadcaster who can deliver clear, engaging newscasts while also serving as an essential member of the newsroom's daily editorial operation. They will be responsible for producing and updating local and regional headlines, monitoring developing stories, and ensuring that listeners receive timely, accurate, and relevant news coverage. They will also be adept in operating studio equipment during live broadcasts
Responsibilities
● Host and deliver live evening newscasts on weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
● Write, edit, and update newscast copy for broadcast.
● Record and produce additional news breaks and updates as needed.
● Maintain a professional, conversational, and authoritative on-air presence.
● Ensure all broadcasts meet journalistic, editorial, and legal standards.
● Monitor local, regional, national, and international news developments throughout each shift.
● Identify, write, and prepare fresh headlines and newscast material for the next morning's Morning Edition broadcast.
● Collaborate with editors, producers, reporters, and assignment staff to ensure coverage reflects the day's most important developments.
● Verify facts, sources, and information before publication or broadcast.
● Contribute story ideas and editorial recommendations based on evolving news priorities.
● Respond quickly to breaking news events and rapidly changing situations.
● Update scripts and newscasts in real time as new information becomes available.
● Coordinate with newsroom leadership and reporters to ensure accurate and timely coverage.
● Exercise strong editorial judgment during high-pressure news situations.
● Operate an in-studio control board and other broadcast production software during live programming
Skillset
● Excellent news judgment and understanding of public media journalism.
● Strong writing, editing, and copy-producing skills.
● Knowledge of local, regional, national, and international news.
● Ability to work independently and make sound editorial decisions.
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
● Ability to communicate and dissipate information to multiple stakeholders.
● Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
● Experience with public radio or public media news operations.
● Audio production and digital editing skills.
● Demonstrates initiative and works effectively with minimal supervision.
● Familiarity with newsroom automation and broadcast systems.
● Experience covering breaking news and live special coverage.
Education and Experience
● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
● Minimum 3-5 years’ experience hosting, anchoring, or reporting for radio, audio, or broadcast news.
Job Specifics
● Boston based position
● Availability to work Sunday through Thursday, including evening and weekend hours; flexibility to work off hours during breaking news
● This is a CWA Local 1400 union position
