Job Description:

Radiation Therapist I

The radiation therapist records a patient's medical information, locates tumors using x-rays and develops treatment plans within the guidelines set by a supervising radiologist and others on cancer patient's oncologic team.

POSITION SUMMARY

The radiation therapist records a patient's medical information, locates tumors using x-rays and develops treatment plans within the guidelines set by a supervising radiologist and others on cancer patient's oncologic team.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Is thoroughly familiar with and maintains knowledge of the physical and geometric characteristics of the radiation therapy equipment used in the Radiation Therapy Center
  • Administers ionizing radiation via linear accelerators to patients in accordance with the prescriptions and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist,  Medical Physicist and Director
  • Verifies the physician’s prescribed course of treatment, patient identification, fields of treatment, and treatment parameters beginning with treatment planning and simulation throughout the entire treatment course
  • Observes the clinical progress of the patient and reports any unusual reactions, events, or developing complications to the clinical nurse and/or Radiation Oncologist
  • Maintains and ensures completeness and accuracy of information entered into the medical record, written or electronic
  • Utilizes the ARIA system and patient charges according to defined department policy, utilizing single, auto-capture, and multi-code capture abilities in ARIA
  • Participates in treatment planning CT simulations
  • Maintains visual and audio communications with the patient during treatment
  • Prepares room and equipment for patient
  • Transports, transfers and positions patients as needed
  • Ensures that assigned areas are adequately stocked, clean and orderly
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending in-service meetings, and workshops

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates clinical radiation oncology skills including linear accelerator treatments and electron fields
  • Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the public
  • Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervision
  • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
  • Exercises good judgment, demonstrates effective critical thinking skills
  • Flexible, able to prioritize and address multiple responsibilities concurrently
  • Works effectively under stress and frequently changing job requirements/situations
  • Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills, mathematical and computer background, strong organizational skills, and proficiency in prioritizing assignments
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipment
  • Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES

  • Graduate of an Accredited Radiologic Technology program in Radiation Therapy Technology
  • State of Oregon license in Radiation Therapy  Technology
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologist registration in Radiation Therapy Technology
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)

EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate who has satisfactorily completed a 24-month course in radiation therapy technology or a graduate of a college course in radiation therapy technology
  • Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist in Radiation Therapy or equivalent as recognized by the ARRT. Candidates eligible for certification by the ARRT must pass within the first six months of employment. Candidates may be a new graduate of up to five years of continuous employment as a Radiation Therapist

Background in Diagnostic Radiologic Technology preferred
