The Economist Group is the leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs. We deliver thought-provoking journalism across formats: web, app and print. What unites us is our independence, our global perspective and our commitment to clarity of thought.

Audio and video are two fast-growing ways our subscribers experience The Economist. From podcasts and article narration to Insider long-form video shows, these formats give our journalism a human dimension and a growing role in the habits that keep subscribers with us.

We are looking for a Principal Product Manager to own our Audio & Video product strategy. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who wants to shape a whole product area directly and build one of the most distinctive parts of our subscription.

About the role

The Principal Product Manager for Audio & Video owns launching new formats and features that add value to the subscription, then engage and then retain subscribers. You will set  the roadmap for our audio and video proposition (podcasts, audio narration, Insider long-form video shows) and work with Design, Editorial, Marketing, Engineering and Analytics to ship it. You will report to the VP of Engagement.

This is an individual contributor role. You will own strategy and delivery directly, working hands-on with a cross-functional team.

How you will contribute

  • Own the Audio & Video roadmap end to end, and use data user research and experimentation to support it
  • Own the brand new Play proposition, a central content proposition in our digital offering, designed to diversify our audience and improve the experience for our Premium subscribers
  • Grow engagement and retention across audio and video, help our subscribers to add more value in their subscription and building habits around these formats.
  • Team up with Engineering to push the platform forward: streaming performance, content delivery, and integrations with Acast, Spotify and Apple Podcasts that get our audio in front of new audiences.
  • Partner with Editorial as they create new formats and build the product experience and the journeys that make it land with subscribers.

The ideal skills and experience for this role

  • You have shipped audio or video product features in a consumer app or digital platform
  • You know how to move a lean, cross-functional team from idea to launch.
  • You think in strategy and roadmap terms setting direction for a whole product area.
  • You understand how listening and viewing habits build long-term subscriber value.
  • You are comfortable defining success metrics, running experiments and using data to make and defend decisions.
  • You have experience in working with editorial teams, understanding their constraints and their priorities.

Domain knowledge

  • Audio product experience: in-app and web players, podcast hosting and distribution (Acast, Spotify, Apple Podcasts).
  • Video product experience: vod, live events, cross-device playback experiences, casting (Airplay/Chromecast).
  • Engagement and retention metrics for audio and video formats.
  • Multi-platform delivery across web, app and third-party platforms.
  • Enthusiasm for The Economist's journalism and global audience.

Location

This role is based in the UK. We work in a hybrid model and ask that team members come into the office three days a week.

The Economist Group values diversity. We are committed to equal opportunities and to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We welcome applicants regardless of ethnic origin, national origin, gender, gender identity, race, colour, religious belief, disability, sexual orientation, age or marital status.
