Our client who runs a commercial poultry farm in State Lodge, Lusaka is looking for a Poultry Farm manager to oversee operations at the farm. The successful candidate will ensure that the poultry unit operates efficiently and consistently achieves production, quality, animal welfare, and profitability targets.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Poultry Production
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily poultry production activities.
- Manage broiler, layer, or breeder operations as applicable.
- Monitor flock performance, growth, egg production, mortality, feed conversion, and other key production indicators.
- Ensure birds receive appropriate feed, clean water, lighting, ventilation, and environmental conditions.
- Coordinate chick placement, vaccination, medication, transfers, harvesting, and flock disposal.
- Maintain appropriate stocking densities and ensure proper housing conditions.
Animal Health & Biosecurity
- Implement and enforce strict farm biosecurity procedures.
- Monitor flock health and identify signs of disease, stress, or abnormal behaviour.
- Work closely with veterinarians and animal-health professionals on vaccination, treatment, and disease-control programmes.
- Maintain accurate records of mortality, medication, vaccination, and disease incidents.
- Ensure proper sanitation and disinfection of poultry houses, equipment, vehicles, and personnel areas.
- Control farm access and ensure visitors and employees follow biosecurity requirements.
Feed & Inventory Management
- Monitor feed consumption and ensure efficient feed utilisation.
- Maintain adequate stocks of feed, vaccines, medicines, disinfectants, bedding materials, and other farm supplies.
- Monitor feed quality and report any abnormalities.
- Minimise wastage, theft, and unnecessary operating costs.
- Maintain accurate inventory records.
Staff Management
- Supervise, train, and motivate poultry farm employees.
- Allocate daily duties and monitor staff performance.
- Ensure employees follow farm procedures, safety requirements, hygiene standards, and biosecurity protocols.
- Conduct staff briefings and provide practical training where necessary.
- Address disciplinary and performance issues in accordance with company policies.
Records & Reporting
- Maintain accurate daily, weekly, and monthly poultry production records.
- Prepare reports covering flock numbers, mortality, feed consumption, egg production/growth, medication, vaccination, and other production indicators.
- Analyse production data and recommend corrective actions where performance is below target.
- Maintain records for audits, regulatory requirements, and management review.
Farm Operations & Maintenance
- Ensure poultry houses, equipment, water systems, feeders, drinkers, generators, and other infrastructure are maintained in good working condition.
- Coordinate repairs and maintenance with relevant personnel.
- Monitor electricity, water, fuel, and other farm utility usage.
- Ensure proper disposal of poultry waste and dead birds in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Promote safe working practices throughout the farm.
Financial & Performance Management
- Prepare and monitor poultry production budgets.
- Control production costs while maintaining bird health and productivity.
- Monitor key performance indicators and identify opportunities to improve profitability.
- Reduce avoidable losses from mortality, feed wastage, poor management, and equipment failure.
- Provide management with recommendations on production planning and resource requirements.
Requirements
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, Poultry Science, Veterinary-related studies, or a relevant field.
- At least 3–5 years of practical experience in commercial poultry production.
- Proven experience supervising poultry farm employees.
- Good understanding of poultry nutrition, flock management, disease prevention, vaccination, and biosecurity.
- Experience with poultry production records and performance monitoring.
- Experience managing both broiler and layer operations.
- Experience preparing production budgets and cost reports.
- Knowledge of Zambian agricultural and animal-health requirements.
