The School of Aerospace Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME) is one of Australia’s leading research and teaching Engineering Schools, with degree programs in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Aeronautical and Space Engineering. We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Materials Characterisation to join a highly collaborative research team within the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. 

The successful candidate will work within a multi-institutional research program comprising HDR and Honours students, industry partners, and international collaborators. The position offers an opportunity to contribute to leading-edge research focused on metallic materials, additive manufacturing, physical metallurgy, and advanced characterisation techniques. 

The successful candidate will be expected to: 

• undertake experimental research in metallic additive manufacturing, with a focus on powder bed fusion processing of advanced engineering alloys  

• investigate processing-microstructure-property relationships using advanced materials characterisation techniques  

• conduct microstructural, crystallographic and chemical analysis using state-of-the-art microscopy and microanalysis facilities  

• develop and optimise additive manufacturing process parameters, feedstock preparation and post-processing methodologies  

• collaborate with research students, academic staff and industry partners on multidisciplinary research projects  

• disseminate research outcomes through publications in leading journals and presentations at national and international conferences. 

About you 

• a PhD qualification in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Additive Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline  

• demonstrated expertise in metallic additive manufacturing, including powder bed fusion technologies 

• experience in advanced materials characterisation techniques such as SEM, EBSD, TEM, PFIB and atom probe tomography  

• strong knowledge of physical metallurgy and microstructure evolution in engineering alloys  

• demonstrated success in publishing high-quality research outcomes in leading international journals  

• experience in developing and applying experimental methodologies for metallic materials research.
