The Ohio State University College of Public Health and the Center for Tobacco Research (CTR) at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for a research training experience focused on tobacco and cannabis product emissions testing and clinical trials. The fellow will work primarily with Dr. Ahmad El Hellani and his collaborators on research related to tobacco and cannabis product emissions testing in the context of regulatory science. Opportunities are available for interdisciplinary mentoring and training in other research areas, as our faculty expertise and institutional resources range from benchtop science to population-level policy and regulation. The environment of The Ohio State University College of Public Health, and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center for Tobacco Research provide access to unparalleled resources to enrich fellows’ research training experience.

Training will be individualized for the fellow to develop competencies in tobacco and cannabis research and specific skills and expertise tailored to the fellow’s research interests. In addition to individualized mentoring, the fellow will have opportunities to take part in seminars and workshops that will provide training in preparing research grant applications, tobacco and cannabis-related research methods, advanced statistical techniques, and other areas.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Leading experiments focused on tobacco and cannabis product emissions testing
  • Developing and implementing experimental protocols for characterizing mainstream particle and aerosol size distributions from combustible and electronic products
  • Expertise in operating liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry equipment
  • Conducting and overseeing data collection, including quality control monitoring procedures
  • Follow the requirements for keeping laboratory records in the El-Hellani laboratory
  • Leading the preparation of abstracts for presentation at national conferences and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication using data from ongoing and recently completed studies supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration Center for Tobacco Products
  • Develop their own grant applications in years 2 and 3 (e.g., F series, K series, or institutional research grants). Additional activities will be determined by the fellow and mentor.

Additional Information:

This position is contingent upon funding and will end on or before September 14, 2029, with possibility of renewal based on continued availability of funding and performance.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • PhD in environmental health sciences, epidemiology, chemistry, biology, or related majors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with tobacco and cannabis research
  • Tobacco emissions testing skills
  • 1 year of relevant analytical chemistry experience preferred.
  • Experience with analytical chemistry equipment and sample preparation procedures.
  • Familiarity with clinical trials related to tobacco and cannabis research

Pay Range: $63,480-$66,948 annual estimated base salary

Salary will be based off of education, experience, internal equity, and budget allowance.

Essential Job Duties

70%:

  • Conduct research on a semi-independent basis to investigate, design, and execute complex laboratory experiments.
  • Develop and implement new and/or revised research methodologies and techniques.
  • Develop new ideas that promote current research.
  • Develop and establish research criteria and standards to meet the goals of research projects.

15%:

  • Data analysis and dissemination in peer-reviewed publications
  • Data sharing in presentations in regional, national, and international conferences.

10%: Train peers and junior research staff on laboratory methods.

5%: Other duties as assigned to support departmental and college work.
