Position Summary
The Pathology Solutions Consultant serves as the primary pathology operations consultant supporting pathology laboratories, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders to optimize specimen management, laboratory workflows, and operational performance for molecular and precision medicine testing.
This customer-facing individual contributor partners closely with pathology laboratories to evaluate current-state operations, identify workflow improvement opportunities, and implement best practices that improve specimen quality, testing success rates, laboratory efficiency, and customer outcomes. The Pathology Solutions Consultant collaborates extensively with Commercial, Laboratory Operations, Information Systems, Compliance, Product Management, and other cross-functional teams to deliver customer-centric operational solutions that support successful testing and advance precision medicine initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert for pathology workflows, specimen management requirements, and laboratory operations supporting molecular and precision medicine testing.
  • Conduct comprehensive onsite and virtual pathology workflow assessments to evaluate laboratory operations and identify opportunities for process optimization.
  • Partner with pathology laboratories to improve specimen acquisition, handling, preservation, storage, submission practices, and overall laboratory workflow efficiency.
  • Develop and implement consultative recommendations that improve specimen quality, testing success rates, turnaround times, and operational performance.
  • Collaborate with Commercial teams to assess customer operational needs and develop tailored workflow improvement strategies.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with pathology laboratory leadership by serving as a strategic operational consultant throughout the customer lifecycle.
  • Lead onsite customer engagements, workflow mapping sessions, laboratory assessments, and operational reviews with pathology and laboratory leadership.
  • Develop implementation plans supporting adoption of standardized workflows, operational best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor customer progress following implementation, identify barriers to success, and recommend corrective actions to sustain operational improvements.
  • Develop and deliver educational programs for pathology personnel focused on specimen collection, handling, preservation, submission requirements, workflow optimization, and operational best practices.
  • Create educational materials, workflow documentation, presentations, and implementation resources supporting customer adoption and ongoing process improvement.
  • Evaluate pathology performance metrics, operational data, testing outcomes, specimen quality, turnaround times, and workflow efficiency to assess laboratory performance.
  • Analyze operational trends, identify root causes of performance challenges, and develop data-driven recommendations for corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop and present key performance indicators (KPIs), scorecards, dashboards, and executive summaries demonstrating operational performance and improvement opportunities.
  • Apply Lean Six Sigma and continuous improvement methodologies to improve customer laboratory performance and operational effectiveness.
  • Present workflow findings, laboratory performance data, and operational improvement recommendations to pathology leadership and executive stakeholders.
  • Investigate and resolve pathology process issues affecting specimen quality, testing success, laboratory efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Analyze Quality Not Sufficient (QNS) trends, specimen acquisition challenges, pre-qualification delays, and workflow inefficiencies while developing practical improvement strategies.
  • Partner with Laboratory Operations, Logistics, Commercial, Product Management, Information Systems, and other internal stakeholders to improve end-to-end specimen management processes.
  • Support new product introductions, operational implementations, customer onboarding activities, and enterprise initiatives to ensure successful laboratory adoption.
  • Provide customer insights and field feedback that support process improvements, product enhancements, and future operational strategies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Life Sciences, Healthcare Administration, related STEM discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in pathology operations, laboratory operations, healthcare consulting, pathology sales, laboratory process improvement, operational excellence, or a related healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting customer-facing workflow assessments and developing operational improvement recommendations.
  • Experience presenting operational findings and influencing pathology laboratory leadership and executive stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability to translate operational data into actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively to support onsite customer engagements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, and general working knowledge of the Internet for business use.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
  • Experience in clinical diagnostics, pathology laboratory operations, biotechnology, medical devices, or healthcare services.
  • Knowledge of specimen management, laboratory workflows, molecular diagnostics, pathology operations, and precision medicine.
  • Experience supporting new product introductions within regulated healthcare environments.
  • Experience designing laboratory operational workflows involving specimen logistics, ordering processes, reporting, and external vendor management.
  • Experience leading customer-facing operational consulting engagements.
  • Experience implementing scalable workflow improvements that deliver measurable operational outcomes.


Physical Demands

  • Ability to travel extensively by commercial airline and automobile.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and conduct onsite customer assessments for extended periods.
  • Ability to present to customer groups, laboratory leadership, and executive stakeholders in both onsite and virtual environments.
  • Ability to use a computer and standard office equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to transport presentation materials and equipment consistent with normal business travel requirements.


Training

  • All job-specific, safety, and compliance training are assigned based on the job functions associated with this employee.


Other

  • This position requires frequent domestic travel to customer sites, conferences, and internal meetings.
  • Position may require overnight travel as well as occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
  • Job may require participation in customer implementations, operational assessments, training programs, and product launches outside of standard business hours.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned to support evolving business needs and organizational priorities.
