The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Pediatrics has an exciting opportunity for a full time Occupational Therapist 1 to work in Miami, FL.


The Occupational Therapist I provides effective and efficient rehabilitation, in accordance with the AOTA guidelines for occupational therapy, and participates in the development of services and programs provided by the University of Miami Health System.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Performs evaluation on new patients, establishes goals, and develops appropriate treatment plans.
  • Documents all evaluations, treatments, and other pertinent patient interactions.
  • Provides relevant education to patients and families regarding the patient’s condition.
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with all members of the rehabilitation team.
  • Communicates with physicians and their staff, obtains necessary information, and suggests revisions in treatment.
  • Participates in quality and safety improvement activities, and orients, instructs, and directs work activities for assistants and support personnel.
  • Supervises and instructs occupational therapy students and provides or participates in educational programs for staff, patients, and the community at large.
  • Participates in program development and marketing efforts.
  • Provides occupational therapy treatment in accordance with the established treatment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to apply therapeutic principles and practices to skillfully and safely progress patients through the levels of treatment within the maximum capabilities of the patient.
  • Pursues professional growth actively through affiliation with professional occupational therapy associations, and workshop and conference attendance.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions:

  • Participate in screening evaluations for children entering the Debbie Institute Education Programs.
  • Evaluate, plan, and implement occupational therapy treatment for the children enrolled in the Debbie Institute Education Programs.
  • Write initial evaluation, quarterly progress notes, Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) goals, Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) Goals, and objectives, plans of care, daily progress notes, and discharge/final summaries for children in occupational therapy at the Debbie Institute.
  • Evaluate, plan, and implement the use of occupational therapy adaptive equipment in the classrooms.
  • Implement the Therapeutic Classroom Model and techniques to coincide with program philosophy.
  • Provide or assist with assessment and therapy techniques to facilitate feeding.
  • Attend interdisciplinary team meetings and staff meetings and contribute to discussion as appropriate.
  • Teach the parents and classroom staff appropriate positioning, handling of fine motor activities and perceptual motor activities.
  • Assist families in obtaining appropriate adaptive equipment.
  • Attend monthly Ancillary Service team meetings and contribute to discussion as appropriate.
  • Supervise students and interns.
  • Attend work related seminars and training annually.
  • Organize and present in-service meetings for staff and families.
  • Other Requirements: Completion of criminal history checks and all background screening requirements, including Level 2 screening requirements in accordance with the requirements of Sections, 1012.485; and 1012.32; and 1012.487, Florida Statutes. Maintain Florida License for Certified Occupational Therapist.

Core Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in relevant field required
  • No previous experience required
  • Valid State of Florida Occupational Therapist (OT) license required
  • Learning Agility: Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
