The Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMC&A) Specialist will support Standard Nuclear’s nuclear fuel production facility by ensuring secure management, accurate tracking, and regulatory compliance of all nuclear materials. This includes implementing systems that prevent unauthorized access, diversion, or misuse of materials, while maintaining full compliance with national and international nuclear safeguards requirements. The NMC&A Specialist will develop and maintain accounting and inventory systems, support inspections and audits, and collaborate closely with security and operations teams to safeguard nuclear materials. This complex, compliance-driven work requires exceptional attention to detail, technical knowledge of safeguards, and proactive problem solving. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Nuclear Material Control & Inventory Management 

  • Maintain accurate, real-time records of all nuclear materials, including acquisition, usage, transfer, and disposal. 
  • Conduct regular physical inventories and reconcile against accounting systems to ensure accuracy. 
  • Implement and oversee tamper-indicating devices, seals, and barriers for nuclear material storage and transport. 

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting 

  • Prepare and submit required reports to the DOE, NRC, IAEA, and other relevant authorities. 
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and international nuclear material control regulations. 
  • Support regulatory inspections, audits, and performance reviews. 

Security & Safeguards 

  • Collaborate with security teams to implement deterrence and protective measures against theft, sabotage, or diversion. 
  • Develop and enforce access protocols and handling procedures for sensitive materials. 
  • Investigate discrepancies, losses, or potential diversion incidents and implement corrective actions. 

Cross-functional Collaboration 

  • Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to integrate MC&A controls into facility operations. 
  • Communicate compliance status, risks, and corrective actions clearly to leadership and stakeholders. 

 

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in: Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline  
  • 3+ years of experience in nuclear material control and accountability, safeguards, nuclear operations, fuel fabrication, or a regulated technical environment  
  • Experience with nuclear material inventory systems, material balance areas, item control, reconciliations, and regulatory reporting  
  • Familiarity with NRC, DOE, or other nuclear safeguards and material accountability requirements  
  • Experience working with uranium, nuclear fuel, radioactive materials, or controlled nuclear material preferred  
  • Familiarity with non-destructive assay, analytical chemistry, metrology, sampling, or measurement uncertainty preferred  
  • Strong data analysis skills and ability to work with detailed technical records and material balances  
  • Experience developing or maintaining procedures, technical documentation, and compliance records  
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, quality, security, licensing, and EH&S teams  
  • Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in a regulated environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

This role is based on-site in Idaho Falls, ID and involves work in office, manufacturing, laboratory, storage, and controlled environments.
