Job Description

Job Title: Nuclear Field Service Engineer

Working Pattern: Full time

Working location: Derby – with travel to various sites

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Nuclear Field Service Engineer to join the Inspection Maintenance and Repair Services (IMRS) team in Derby. IMRS is primarily responsible for the design, development and implementation of bespoke inspections for the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant.

Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance and through-life support.

As a Nuclear Field Service Engineer, you will provide both practical and technical support to maintain existing and develop new or alternative capabilities to support the repair, inspection, or maintenance of NSRP and associated systems.

Additionally, you will be responsible for executing significant on-site repair, inspection, or maintenance with minimal technical support. Hold responsibility for ensuring that specific maintenance and repair packages are professionally administered on a day-to-day basis through on-site liaison with the customer, whilst maintaining all relevant technical documentation. Provide site management and technical support to NSRP repair, inspection, or maintenance work as well as providing direction to less experienced employees, supporting their development through the provision of on-the-job training.

  • Contribute towards continuous improvement, the transfer of best practice, and the adherence to processes and procedures.

Shifts / Travel

Although Derby based, the role will require travelling to various sites across the UK for varying durations and will normally consist of working shift patterns, usually based on 12-hour days or nights, dependent on the task. The number of days a year site deployed is approximately 80 to 100 days, although durations will vary based on workload and training. Although site work is generally pre-planned, there will be the requirement to support emergent requests to deploy at short notice. Site tasks will involve working in radiological areas and can involve working in confined spaces. Whilst in Derby, flexible working hours are in place from 7:00am to 6:00pm, working a standard 7.4 hours per day.

  • Must have a flexible approach and be prepared to work away at site (typically up to two-week durations).
  • Experience in developing engineering solutions e.g. strong problem-solving skills, production of engineering drawings, design documentation and use of CAD packages.
  • Able to work well unsupervised, managing your time and balancing your day-to-day priorities and commitments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in and lead a team, whilst deployed on site.
  • Good communication skills, as you must be able to interact effectively and build relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
