POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW
The department is seeking a dedicated Student Advisor for the forthcoming 2026-2027 academic cycle. In this role, advisors support both incoming and current NSSR graduate scholars by facilitating enrollment procedures, degree requirement fulfillment, and various institutional administrative processes. This appointment carries a projected commitment of 10 to 25 hours per week for the duration of the academic year.

This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement between SENS-UAW, Local 7902 and the University.


CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Below is a list of responsibilities. The primary supervisor for the duty is noted (C=Chair; AA=Academic Affairs; AA/C=joint involvement of Academic Affairs and Chair in aspects of the project):

  • Coordinate faculty advising for new and continuing students (C).

  • Provide program information to continuing students (AA/C).

  • Develop and/or update student handbooks to be available during fall registration each year (AA/C).

  • Organize, advertise, and conduct orientation activities for new students (AA/C).

  • Assist in gathering information about enrollment and placement (AA/C).

  • Gather, organize, and review data for biannual academic review of students by department/committee faculty (AA/C).

  • Maintain department records for students, including faculty advising assignments (AA/C).

  • Report on departmental advising and dissertation committees to the Office of Academic Affairs. (AA)

  • Participate in departmental/committee faculty meetings (C).

  • Participate in monthly meetings with other Student Advisors and the Coordinator of Academic Affairs (AA).

  • Post and maintain regular office hours throughout the fiscal year (July 1- June 30), as well as increased office hours during registration and add/drop periods (AA).

  • Consult and assist students during all periods of registration(AA).

  • Work with the Registrar’s Office to complete paperwork regarding non-course requirements, as well as complete the graduation-related tasks (AA/C).

  • Assist with the administration of departmental/committee MA and PhD exams (C).

  • Evaluate placement and removal of certain department registration holds (AA/C).

  • Carry out the administrative and clerical responsibilities (typing, correspondence, telephoning, filing, etc.) associated with the above responsibilities (AA/C).


QUALIFICATIONS

  • An advanced scholar in excellent standing, possessing a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4, who has successfully fulfilled 66% of their attempted credits prior to the start of the term.

  • Candidates must not have requested or received any timeframe extensions regarding the fulfillment of their NSSR degree requirements.

  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the institutional policies and milestones necessary for scholarly advancement within the NSSR and their specific academic department.

WORK MODE
This role utilizes a hybrid model. To foster robust on-site partnership and community participation, students must maintain a physical presence on campus as required. Alternative remote or blended schedules may be reviewed individually, contingent upon departmental requirements and functional demands. Such setups require prior consultation and formal authorization from the relevant divisional leadership or an authorized representative. #LI-DNI

$27 per hour
