Purpose of Job:

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide centralized management for all aspects of the Interstate Batteries (IB) fleet management program for all company-owned and leased fleet equipment across North America. This includes vehicle and material handling equipment (MHE) acquisition, maintenance, and compliance with regulations. The role develops and implements fleet strategies, policies, procedures, works with operational and senior leadership teams.  This role owns fleet life cycle management and ownership costs, and oversees fleet regulatory and safety compliance, making recommendations based on business requirements.

 

Job Components:

Strategic:

  • Develop, execute and maintain a national fleet (operations and compliance) program.
  • Manage and develop programs and strategies that support fleet operations across the system to improve visibility, analytics, and short/long-term objectives.
  • Manage vehicle specification, procurement, replacement cycles and disposition/remarketing to optimize total cost of ownership.
  • Oversee all preventive maintenance programs across owned and leased assets to maximize vehicle uptime and minimize breakdowns.
  • Partner with Procurement and Finance on fleet capital budgeting, lease-vs-buy analysis, fuel/maintenance, and spend forecasting.
  • Steer strategic direction of IT and Telematic system vendors on fleet tracking, analysis and reporting.
  • Set and monitor fleet KPIs, providing regular reporting to operational leadership.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the DOT compliance manager’s programs, ensuring the fleet operates in full compliance with all mandatory regulations.
  • Partner with Risk/Safety/Legal on fleet related insurance, claims, and accident investigation/trend analysis.
  • Own relationships with leasing companies and work with procurement on master lease and purchase agreements.
  • Identify and lead fleet cost-reduction and process-improvement initiatives.
  • Train personnel on new initiatives, systems, and regulations.
  • Stay informed on technical knowledge of fleet practices to ensure proper use of current and new technologies for delivery and operating efficiencies.

 

Tactical

  • Champion a culture of compliance with fleet related DOT/FMCSA, PHMSA, OSHA, and EPA regulations.
  • Manage relationships with operations teams in execution of fleet programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure safe and reliable vehicles are available to meet operational requirements.
  • Create, implement, manage, and monitor fleet operating policies and procedures.
  • Conduct fleet evaluations to ensure maintenance standards are met.
  • Manage leasing company fleet and all outside maintenance vendors – monitor repairs and cost to ensure cost-effective programs are in place.
  • Manage preventive maintenance program compliance.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor team members.

 

Qualifications:

               

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain, logistics, or related field. 
  • 7-10 years commercial fleet leadership experience.
  • Professional credentials [i.e. NAFA's Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) or National Private Truck Council’s (NPTC) Certified Transportation Professional (CTP)], are a plus.
  • Technical knowledge in the fleet industry including DOT expertise and understanding of hazmat regulations. 
  • Experience managing all aspects of a national commercial/private fleet.
  • Proven track record of continuous improvement.
  • Leadership qualities proven through successful financial and tactical fleet operations results.
  • Proficiency in applications to include PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and/or Power BI.
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Comfortable presenting to large audiences and in one-on-one meetings with senior leadership.
  • Ability to evaluate, mentor, grow and develop team members.
  • Exceptional time, project management, and organizational skills with attention to detail.

 

Scope Data:

  • Manage all fleet costs, procurement, and administrative processes.
  • Maintain accountability of company owned fleet assets, equipment and driver compliance.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on fleet matters across the IB system.
  • Approve vehicle maintenance expenditures and provide guidance on capital purchases.

 

Work Environment:

  • Generally working in an office environment.
  • Occasional exposure warehouse and/or fulfillment center environments.
  • Ability to climb in, on, and around vehicle and MHE equipment.
  • Travel – Up to 10%, based on business needs (across North America)
