RSM’s Washington National Tax team is an experience-based group of distinguished tax professionals who track tax developments directly from the sources and immediately translate the information into how these changes impact our clients. With resources across the country and a physical presence in Washington, D.C., our team stays up to date on the latest developments in tax policy and tax developments. Team members share their analysis of potential implications of new tax laws, Treasury regulations and IRS pronouncements through a regular cadence of articles, webcasts and newsletters and working closely with our engagement teams and clients.

RSM's WNT Exempt Organizations and Philanthropy practice works closely with public charities, private foundations, social welfare organizations, trade and professional associations, educational institutions, healthcare organizations, religious organizations, and other exempt entities. The practice advises exempt organizations and their contributors, managers, and advisors on a broad range of federal tax matters and monitors legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments affecting the exempt sector. In addition, the team advises individuals, partnerships, and corporations with respect to charitable contributions and philanthropic planning strategies.

We currently are seeking a candidate with strong exempt organization tax advisory experience to join our WNT Exempt Organizations and Philanthropy practice in a Managing Director position. This position will provide tax technical support on a broad range of exempt organization tax matters, including exempt status, operational compliance, unrelated business income, Form 990-series reporting, international activities, governance considerations, and legislative and regulatory developments affecting tax-exempt organizations.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage client relationships for complex engagements, delivering high-value tax advice and expanding services
  • Drive growth and profitability through new revenue generation, cross-selling, and new client acquisition
  • Communicate complex tax concepts in a clear, non-technical manner to support client understanding and risk management
  • Build cross-functional relationships to deliver integrated client service
  • Serve as a national technical resource for public charities, private foundations, associations, healthcare organizations, educational institutions, and other exempt entities
  • Provide technical guidance regarding complex operational and transactional matters affecting exempt organizations 
  • Analyze legislative, regulatory, and IRS developments affecting exempt organizations and communicate practical implications to clients and RSM professionals
  • Assist with formation and restructuring of exempt organizations, including terminations, mergers, split-ups, transfers, and conversions
  • Represent tax-exempt organizations before the IRS with respect to private letter ruling requests, determination letters and IRS examinations
  • Draft thought leadership alerts, articles and other content
  • Provide internal knowledge sharing, including the development and delivery of training
  • Maintain competency as a technical resource and subject matter expert through continuing education
  • Participate in and contribute to marketing and business activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned; travel may be required based on business needs

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited university
  • One of the following is required: active CPA license in the state of residence or primary office; active Enrolled Agent (EA) license; active Attorney license; or a pre-approved alternative certification that meets RSM requirements (View Alternative Licenses Guidance)
  • Minimum of twelve years of tax experience in public accounting, with the ability to effectively identify, sell, and deliver tax services to middle-market clients
  • Deep understanding of federal tax rules applicable to exempt organizations
  • Effective project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, tasks, and projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy and quality of work in a fast-paced, client service environment
  • Ability to maintain consistent, onsite presence during core business hours, including regular reporting to a firm office and travel to client sites as required
  • Ability to work extended and/or non-standard hours during peak periods or as necessary to meet client, project, or firm business needs
  • Strong consulting experience with complex tax issues affecting exempt organizations, such as unrelated business activities, intermediate sanctions, and Chapter 42 excise taxes, and lobbying and political activities  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience advising on compensation matters and/or tax-exempt investor issues
  • LLM (Taxation) or Masters in Taxation

At RSM, an employee’s pay at any point in their career is intended to reflect their experiences, performance, and skills for their current role. The salary range (or starting rate for interns and associates) for this role represents numerous factors considered in the hiring decisions including, but not limited to, education, skills, work experience, certifications, location, etc. As such, pay for the successful candidate(s) could fall anywhere within the stated range.

Compensation Range: $172,100 - $376,200

Individuals selected for this role will be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on firm and individual performance.
