Mgr Nuc NDE Inspection Svcs

Job Summary:

This open position is in the Corporate Programs Engineering Department and reports to the Director of Programs Engineering. The manager will lead a staff of supervisors, NDE technicians, and other professional technical personnel who will provide implementation and oversight of the NDE Services organization across all 6 nuclear facilities.  This position can be located at McGuire Island or at other Duke Energy locations.

Responsibilities:

• Overall responsibility for Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) Program including direct oversight of online and outage planning, preparations and implementation at Brunswick, Harris, Robinson, McGuire, Catawba and Oconee such that online and outage related NDE activities necessary for the operation, testing, maintenance, and modification of plant systems, structures, and components are completed in a safe, efficient, cost effective, and timely manner.
• Oversight of Duke Energy and contract personnel who perform NDE Level III functions.
• Overall responsibility for outage support plans, Contract Manager for NDE contracts and assisting in the development of online and outage budgets, which includes identifying cost and manpower savings opportunities within their responsibility and span of control.
• Overall responsibility for ensuring NDE activities are performed in a timely, safe, predictable and error free manner.  For outages, the incumbent must be capable of preparing outage support plans, attending NDE/ ISI HIT team meetings including safety, human performance, ALARA, schedule, manpower, and budget planning.
• Ensures adherence to technical and administrative procedures as well as safe work practices and policies applicable to nuclear generation.
• Ensure capable individuals are assigned to perform the roles to support the NDE organization and appropriate training is provided to ensure knowledge and skills are achieved and maintained. Will be the chair of the NDE Training Review Committee (TRC)
• Performs observations and provides coaching as necessary to improve performance.
• Identifies gaps in department and worker performance and develops solutions to close the gaps to improve performance.
• Identifies opportunities to leverage innovation and work elimination to improve efficiency and champions the implementation of those opportunities.
• Collaborate with other departments at all sites to support work management, outage management, and equipment reliability initiatives.
• Work with employees to create Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to support their career progression and improve performance.
• Participates in Engineering training forums/processes to ensure adequate line ownership of training.
• Motivates teams to display leadership and team effectiveness attributes that are foundational to excellent organizational effectiveness.
• Ensure NDE staff are appropriately engaged in industry and regulatory activities with the purpose of advocating for the company's needs.
• Manages the staff of NDE and professional technical staff who perform various engineering activities, including but not limited to, ownership of assigned programs supporting troubleshooting and failure investigation activities; managing the long-range plans for NDE programs; monitoring program health; and supporting fleet/site initiatives.
• Ensures use of technical conscience principles and technical rigor during development of NDE products and recommendations that are commensurate with the safety significance.
• Provides engineering expertise to recognize and resolve complex engineering/technical problems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient station operations/power generation.

Basic Qualifications:

• Two year technical degree in related inspection field and 10 years nuclear experience.
• In lieu of a technical degree, 12 years nuclear experience.
• 10 years of professional level NDE experience in any method.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge and understanding of the QA program and other related documents.
• Demonstrated knowledge of ASME Code Sections II, III, V, IX, and XI
• Demonstrated planning and organizational skills.
  

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Four year technical degree from an ABET accredited university.
• Prior experience as an NDE Level III in any method.
• Working knowledge of various organizations (NRC, INPO, EPRI, NEI, etc) supporting the Nuclear Industry.
• Understanding of basic principles of project management and contract issue process.
• Relevant experience in selecting and engaging consultants and contractors for dealing with complex problems and emergent issues.

Working Conditions

• Office environment with some work in the plant to support various aspects of the NDE organization.
• Routine on-system travel to Duke nuclear sites
• Occasional off-system travel to industry meetings, seminars, and manufacturer oversight visits
• Overtime on an as-needed basis to support plant issues and projects
  

Specific Requirements

• Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
• Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
• This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
• Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
• Overnight travel required.
