Job Summary

Carolinas Accounting & Reporting is within the Controller’s Department and provides accounting, financial analysis, and reporting support for Duke Energy. This position serves as a hands-on technical lead for revenue accounting, reporting, and analytics supporting Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress. The role is responsible for ensuring revenue transactions originating from SAP billing and other source systems are accurately recorded, reconciled, analyzed, and reported in accordance with GAAP, FERC, regulatory, and internal-control requirements. Responsibilities span journal entries, monthly and quarterly close, management reporting, variance analysis, data validation, reconciliations, and research into complex revenue matters.

The successful candidate will combine strong accounting judgment with advanced data-analysis capabilities. This includes independently developing complex SQL queries and/or Python code to analyze large transactional datasets, identify anomalies, reconcile source-system activity to the general ledger, and create repeatable reporting solutions.

Equally important, the successful candidate will demonstrate executive presence and the ability to translate detailed accounting and transactional data into a concise, decision-useful explanation of key business drivers, emerging risks, and recommended actions. The position works independently on complex matters, leads cross-functional initiatives, and provides technical guidance and review to other team members.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the accounting, analysis, and reporting of DEC and DEP revenue, including journal entries, account reconciliations, close activities, management reporting, and support for internal and external reporting.
  • Analyze revenue transactions originating from SAP billing and other source systems, ensuring activity is complete, accurate, appropriately classified, and properly reflected in the general ledger.
  • Independently write and maintain complex SQL queries and/or Python code to extract, join, transform, reconcile, and analyze large transactional datasets.
  • Develop repeatable, controlled analytical solutions that improve the accuracy, timeliness, and transparency of revenue reporting.
  • Lead monthly and quarterly revenue variance analysis, identifying and quantifying the principal business, operational, accounting, timing, and data-related drivers of performance.
  • Translate complex analytical findings into concise, executive-ready reporting that communicates results, risks, implications, and recommended actions.
  • Develop an end-to-end understanding of revenue data flows from billing and operational source systems through interfaces, accounting entries, the general ledger, and financial and management reporting.
  • Investigate revenue anomalies and reconciliation differences, determine root causes, and partner with Accounting, Finance, IT, Billing, Rates and Regulatory, and other stakeholders to implement sustainable solutions.
  • Apply sound accounting judgment to complex revenue matters in accordance with GAAP, FERC requirements, applicable regulatory guidance, and company policies.
  • Maintain effective internal controls, documentation, query validation, and audit evidence supporting revenue accounting and reporting processes.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, review, and guidance to teammates while independently executing the most complex accounting and analytical work.
  • Lead continuous-improvement and automation initiatives that reduce manual effort, strengthen controls, improve data quality, and accelerate the delivery of decision-useful information.
  • Manage multiple high-visibility priorities and proactively communicate issues, dependencies, conclusions, and recommended actions to management.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Data Analytics, Management Information Systems, or another closely related discipline.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, financial reporting, revenue analysis, financial systems, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and finance principles, with demonstrated ability to research and resolve complex accounting or reporting matters.
  • Demonstrated experience independently writing and validating complex SQL queries and/or Python code to analyze large transactional datasets.

Desired Qualifications

  • Eight or more years of progressively responsible experience.
  • CPA, CPA candidate, or graduate degree in Accounting, Business, Analytics, or a related field.
  • Experience performing complex financial variance analysis and identifying underlying business drivers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex accounting and analytical conclusions clearly to management and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel and experience with financial reporting, visualization, or business-intelligence tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver accurate results under strict reporting deadlines.
  • Revenue accounting or utility accounting experience.
  • Experience analyzing data from SAP billing, SAP ERP, or other enterprise billing and financial systems.
  • Experience reconciling source-system transactions to general-ledger activity.
  • Experience building automated or repeatable reporting and analytical solutions using SQL, Python, Power BI, or comparable tools.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, FERC accounting requirements, rate-making principles, and utility revenue processes.
  • Experience with OneStream, Workiva/Wdesk, PeopleSoft, CAPS Online, or other financial reporting systems.
  • Experience presenting financial results, business drivers, and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Experience supporting SOX controls, internal and external audits, SEC reporting, FERC reporting, or regulatory filings.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to efficiently multi-task within tight deadlines
  • Experience with FERC form preparation and other regulatory filings
  • Public accounting or auditing experience
