Position Summary

The Industrial Maintenance Technician (Journeyman Electrician) is responsible for maintaining the safety, reliability, and performance of production equipment, facility systems, and utility infrastructure throughout the plant. This position requires journeyman-level electrical knowledge and experience to support troubleshooting, repair, installation, and improvement of industrial electrical and control systems.

While electrical expertise is a critical requirement, this is fundamentally a hands-on maintenance position. The successful candidate will routinely perform preventive maintenance, mechanical repairs, troubleshooting equipment, facility maintenance, and reliability improvement activities in addition to electrical work. Responsibilities may include inspecting and servicing production equipment, replacing mechanical components, supporting equipment installations, responding to breakdowns, and executing planned maintenance activities.

This role requires an individual who is comfortable working across a wide variety of maintenance tasks, understands the importance of equipment reliability and up time, and can effectively transition between electrical and mechanical responsibilities based on operational needs. The ideal candidate is a safety-focused problem solver who thrives in a manufacturing environment, works well independently and as part of a team, and is committed to supporting continuous improvement efforts throughout the facility.

Responsibilities

Electrical Systems and Controls

  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain industrial electrical systems, motors, motor controls, and production equipment.

  • Diagnose and repair electrical circuits and controls up to 480 VAC, including breakers, contactors, starters, relays, sensors, and related components.

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, technical drawings, and equipment documentation.

  • Support installation and modification of production equipment, control systems, and electrical infrastructure.

  • Assist with electrical projects, equipment upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Ensure all electrical work is performed in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and company safety requirements.

  • Train and support operators and maintenance personnel on electrical systems and equipment as appropriate.

General Maintenance and Facilities

  • Perform non-electrical preventive and corrective maintenance on production equipment, utilities, and facility systems as assigned.

  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and production issues using systematic problem-solving techniques to identify root causes and implement sustainable corrective actions.

  • Inspect, repair, adjust, replace, and lubricate mechanical components including bearings, belts, chains, gearboxes, couplings, pumps, valves, conveyors, guards, and related equipment.

  • Support basic pneumatic and general facility repairs when needed and within demonstrated competency.

  • Complete scheduled preventive maintenance, equipment inspections, work orders, and condition checks; identify developing problems before they cause downtime or safety risk.

  • Assist with equipment moves, installations, changeovers, fabrication, and other plant projects using appropriate hand, power, and diagnostic tools.

  • Maintain clean, orderly work areas and properly manage tools, replacement parts, and maintenance supplies.

  • Respond to production and facility service requests, communicate repair status, and coordinate priorities with the supervisor and affected departments.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance documentation, work order records, and parts usage within the CMMS.

Safety, Reliability, and Teamwork

  • Follow all electrical, lockout/tagout, arc-flash, fall-protection, machine-guarding, confined-space, hot-work, and other applicable safety requirements.

  • Promote a culture of safety by identifying hazards and addressing unsafe conditions.

  • Perform job hazard and ergonomic evaluations; stop work and escalate conditions that cannot be completed safely.

  • Support root-cause analysis, equipment reliability, continuous improvement, and the elimination of waste and variation in maintenance processes.

  • Record labor, parts, failure information, corrective actions, and follow-up needs in the CMMS computer software system.

  • Communicate effectively with internal customers, contractors, vendors, engineers, team leaders, and other maintenance personnel.

  • Contribute to a respectful, service-oriented, high-performance team environment and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Respond to maintenance needs with urgency and flexibility, including overtime or alternate schedules when required.

Personal Attributes and Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Current Journeyman Electrician license in good standing.

  • Two-year technical degree, electrical apprenticeship completion, or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.

  • Three to five years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, including electrical troubleshooting, repair, and installation.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial power distribution, electrical controls, motors, control panels, and applicable electrical codes and safe work practices.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform preventive maintenance, mechanical repairs, troubleshooting equipment, and facility maintenance activities in addition to electrical work.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, equipment drawings, manuals, specifications, and work instructions.

  • Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, math, organization, documentation, and communication skills.

  • Ability to use electrical test equipment, hand tools, power tools, and computer applications such as Microsoft Outlook.

  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and collaborate in a team-based, multicultural workplace.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PLCs, variable-frequency drives, automation, instrumentation, computerized maintenance management systems, and industrial networks.

  • Experience with mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, welding/fabrication, general facility maintenance or willingness to be trained in these categories.

  • Experience maintaining production equipment, including conveyors, pumps, bearings, chains, belts, gearboxes, pneumatic systems, and other industrial mechanical equipment.

  • Experience working in a multi-disciplined industrial maintenance environment.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in an industrial manufacturing environment and throughout facility areas. The employee may work near moving machinery, energized equipment, elevated work areas, and other production hazards. Noise levels may be loud, and required personal protective equipment must be worn. Computer work is also required for planning, documentation, and communication.

  • Regularly stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to handle tools, equipment, and controls.

  • Occasionally sit for planning, documentation, and computer work.

  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and use team lifting or mechanical assistance for heavier items in accordance with company policy.

  • Have close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision sufficient to perform the work safely, including the ability to adjust focus.

  • Work from ladders or lifts and in tight or awkward spaces when properly trained, authorized, and equipped.

  • Maintain reliable attendance and respond to urgent maintenance needs as required by the assigned schedule.

Role Expectations

Success in this position requires a safety-first mindset, reliable and timely service, high-quality workmanship, disciplined documentation, and flexibility across maintenance disciplines. The successful candidate will use their journeyman-level electrical expertise to support overall equipment reliability while performing a combination of electrical, mechanical, preventive maintenance, and facility maintenance activities based on business needs. Employees are expected to recognize the limits of their training and authorization and obtain assistance or escalate work when specialized qualifications are required.
