WTOL 11, Toledo’s News Leader, is looking for a Multi-Skilled Journalist to join our award-winning 11Investigates team.This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career journalist who wants to learn how to dig deeper, ask tough questions and tell stories that make a difference. You don’t need years of investigative reporting experience. We’re looking for someone with strong journalism fundamentals, curiosity, determination and a willingness to sharpen your skills. You’ll work alongside our Emmy Award-winning and national Edward R. Murrow Award-winning journalists, gaining hands-on experience in investigative, accountability and consumer reporting.
What You’ll Do
As part of the 11Investigates team, you will:
• Pitch, shoot, write, edit and report stories across broadcast, digital and streaming platforms.
• Work alongside experienced investigative journalists to research and develop stories.
• File and track FOIA and public records requests
• Research court records, government documents, public information and data to help uncover new stories.
• Follow up on daily news stories and look for unanswered questions and accountability angles.
• Take viewer calls, emails and story tips and help determine where our newsroom can get involved.
• Support our Call 11 for Action reporting by helping investigate consumer concerns and working to get viewers answers.
• Conduct interviews with community members, public officials and other newsmakers.
• Create journalism for all WTOL 11 platforms, including television, WTOL.com, streaming, social media and vertical video.
• Assist with breaking news and major coverage when needed.
The ideal candidate
• Has a degree in journalism, communications or a related field, or equivalent journalism experience.
• Understands the basics of reporting, writing, shooting and video editing.
• Has strong writing and communication skills.
• Is comfortable approaching people, making phone calls and asking questions.
• Has strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and fairness.
• File public records requests, analyze documents and conduct accountability interviews.
• Can manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
• Wants coaching and is eager to grow as a reporter, storyteller and investigative journalist.
