How You Succeed

To excel in this role, you'll need to be curious, analytical, and detail-oriented. You'll work closely with risk professionals and business stakeholders to assess risks and controls, review processes, and support the uplift of the Risk & Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) framework. Your ability to gather and analyse information, challenge assumptions thoughtfully, and communicate insights effectively will be key to supporting a strong risk culture across the bank.

What You Do

Your responsibilities will include:

• Risk & Control Reviews: support the review and challenge of Risk & Control Registers across business units and support functions through research, data gathering, stakeholder discussions, and process walkthroughs
• RCSA Support: assist in the ongoing uplift and operationalisation of the Risk & Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) programme across the organisation
• Operational Risk Analysis: analyse operational risk events, issues, audit observations, key risk indicators (KRIs), and control weaknesses to identify emerging risk themes and improvement opportunities
• Data Quality & Governance: support data quality reviews of business units' RCSA inputs and outputs, including validation and data management activities within risk management systems
• Process & Control Assessment: contribute to process reviews, control assessments, root cause analysis, and identification of opportunities to strengthen the control environment
• Risk Reporting & Insights: assist in analysing information and preparing reports, dashboards, and management updates that support risk oversight and decision-making
• Stakeholder Engagement: collaborate with business units, support functions, and risk teams to facilitate effective risk management discussions and governance activities
• Ad-hoc Projects: provide support on operational risk management, governance, and transformation initiatives as assigned

Who You Work With

Group Non-Financial Risk Management partners business and support units across the bank to strengthen risk governance, promote a strong risk culture, and enhance operational resilience. Within Group Operational Risk Management, you'll work alongside experienced risk professionals responsible for overseeing operational risk frameworks, conducting independent reviews, and providing effective challenge across the organisation. You'll gain valuable exposure to both Global Wholesale Banking and Private Banking businesses, and develop a deeper understanding of risk management in a complex banking environment.

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Business, Banking, Finance, Accountancy, Economics, Risk Management, Data Analytics, or a related discipline

Learning Objectives

This internship will provide you with:

• An understanding of Operational Risk Management and the Three Lines of Defence model within a banking environment
• Hands-on exposure to second line of defence (2LoD) review and challenge activities as part of the Risk & Control Self-Assessment framework
• Practical experience in process analysis, control evaluation, and root cause identification
• Exposure to how operational risks, incidents, control weaknesses, and governance issues are identified, assessed, and escalated
• Opportunities to develop analytical, critical thinking, and professional writing skills in a real-world risk management setting
• Insights into banking products, processes, and risk management frameworks across different business units
• Experience working with risk data, governance processes, and technology-enabled risk management tools
• A strong foundation to independently perform basic 2LoD reviews, analyse risk information critically, and articulate recommendations to strengthen the bank's control environment upon completion of the internship
