USC’s School for Early Childhood Education is dedicated to providing comprehensive, high-quality early childhood education services to children and their families in the South Los Angeles area. Founded in 1970 as a teaching school for future early-childhood professionals, the USC School for Early Childhood Education (USC SECE) seeks to promote school readiness, health/nutrition, mental wellness, and family engagement. Today, our licensed Head Start and Early Head Start centers serve more than 500 infants and pre-school children and their parents each year. We are seeking enthusiastic, creative, dynamic, and team-oriented individuals who enjoy working with children while fostering a supportive learning environment.

Job Overview:

This position provides high quality, comprehensive, early childhood education and family and health support services to ten to twelve families (15 children) through home visits and bimonthly socialization times. The Home Visitor, Early Head Start designs activities to support parents of infants and toddlers in promoting social, physical, and intellectual growth of their children in the home setting. They also facilitate group socialization activities for children and parents. This role requires individuals who can work independently and make sound decisions. Assure completion of all program requirements and while adhering to Head Start Performance Standards and program policies.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Leads the planning and implementation of personal care, as well as daily educational and recreational activities. Supports parents in facilitating learning in the home environment. Sets up materials for individual/group instruction.
  • Maintains the ongoing health, safety, and upkeep of the learning environment.
  • Participates in planning and coordinating programs (e.g., extracurricular/outreach, staff development, parent education/involvement). Orders supplies and materials as needed.
  • Prepares and submits documents (e.g., home visits, lesson plans, reports, parent conferences, child/staff evaluations) in a timely manner.
  • Maintains accurate visit records. Uses a comprehensive approach to support families in the areas of health, nutrition, mental health, disabilities, family services and education.
  • Evaluates students; maintains records for each child (e.g., anecdotal, developmental, progress).
  • Assists in ensuring compliance with all applicable requirements (e.g., state child care licensing, health and safety, accreditation standards).
  • Liaises between parents and relevant stakeholders. Meets with parents to discuss child's progress, provide counsel/advice, and create learning/development strategies as appropriate. Attends required meetings (e.g., site, staff, in-service workshops). Engages in instructional coaching as needed or required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid CA driver's license required. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. A copy of DMV record will be required as a final condition of employment. For more information, please visit the policy website.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development, Social Work, or related field.
  • 2 years of experience in early childhood education.
  • Demonstrated written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with the internet and computer applications/software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Windows).
  • California Commission on Teacher Credentialing - Child Development Permit or higher OR Family Development Credential.
  • Infant and Child First Aid/CPR certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience in early childhood education.
  • Ability to create and implement daily curriculum plans.
  • Ability to work well harmoniously in a multi-cultural team.
  • Ability to promote a feeling of security and trust in infants and toddlers, and preschool age children by being warm, supportive, and comforting.
  • A caring, compassionate approach to working with children and families as well as maintaining an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child’s family.
  • Awareness of safe lifting techniques for lifting children, supplies and furnishings and commitment to using preventive health measures in the classroom to prevent the spread of disease.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able climb stairs, reach, bend, lift 20-30 pounds, crawl, kneel, stoop, twist, grasp with hands and fingers materials, use arms and legs, able to walk, climb ladders if applicable.

The hourly rate rate for this position is $24.02. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree In Early Childhood Development Or Social Work Or in related field(s)
Minimum Certifications: California Commission on Teacher Credentialing - Child Development Permit or higher OR Family Development Credential BLS/CPR Infant and Child First Aid/CPR certification
Minimum Experience: 2 years
