Turbine and Generator Services’ (TGS) vision is to Optimize the reliability and cost of Regulated Renewable Energy’s (RRE) centerline assets through data-driven technical solutions, collaboration and oversite.

The Generator Engineering team provides advanced engineering support for Duke Energy’s fleet of utility-scale generators and associated electrical systems. As the organization’s technical subject matter experts, Generator Engineers perform equipment condition assessments, analyze operational and maintenance data, troubleshoot complex generator issues, lead root cause investigations, and develop technical recommendations to improve reliability and performance. The team supports major outages and generator repair projects through technical oversight, engineering evaluations, inspection planning, and repair scope development. Working across multiple generating stations, Generator Engineers apply fleet-wide lessons learned and industry best practices to solve challenging technical problems, extend asset life, and ensure the safe and reliable operation of critical generating equipment.

The Senior Engineer is at the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. They solve complex problems, manage work, and develop innovative ways to streamline processes. Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are also encouraged to have a fleet level impact while being responsible for assets in the Carolinas region.

This position can be located anywhere within Duke Energy’s Florida service territory.

Responsibilities

• TGS Generator Engineers provide frontline engineering support for generator centerline equipment.  This involves direct technical engagement and coordination with plant operations, engineering, and technical support functions; other internal technical support organizations; OEM’s; vendors; shops and other resources as required. 

• Generator Engineers interface and coordinate with multiple organizations and individuals to ensure that major maintenance on generators: is prioritized and scheduled correctly based on maintenance history, existing technical issues, and asset maintenance interval; achieves specified outage goals; is in accordance with all applicable specifications and requirements; is accomplished with only approved parts and repair/assembly techniques; complies with all required inspections and hold points; is executed with tasks in the correct order; and is completely and accurately documented.   

• Generator Engineers develop detailed outage work scope requirements/documentation and engage in many other engineering and technical support activities to directly support the operations, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of reliability on the generator assets. 

• Generator Engineers provide a significant 'boots on the ground' engineering presence during planned or emergent outages and other significant events or evolutions on the generator centerline assets.  When not directly supporting onsite work, the Generator Engineer is engaged in planning, research, reviews, root cause analysis, documentation, etc. to support the availability, reliability, and major maintenance planning for these assets.  

• Generators Engineers are considered the "technical owner" of the generator, exciter, and generator auxiliary systems and would be responsible for reliable performance of these components. 

• Specific actions that are routinely performed by Generator Engineering: 
  • Monitoring computer trends to assess equipment condition and influence future work plans 
  • Evaluating Monitoring & Diagnostic Center notifications and providing recommended actions to stations 
  • Performing station walkdowns to identify reliability risks and providing actions to stations to resolve 
  • Providing station support for emergent events or operational questions/challenges 
  • Writing procurement specifications for major work, including bid evaluation and ranking 
  • Providing onsite technical oversight for outage work where necessary  
  • Providing technical oversight at vendor shops for quality/technical execution 
  • Writing technical papers to provide justification for major work needs/budget challenges 
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.  
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.   
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.   
  • Maintains accurate records and files 
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally. 

Basic Qualifications

• Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
• Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
• A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Working Conditions

• Field Mobility Classification - Work location is highly mobile, working at various facilities or field locations with occasional onsite meetings after the onboarding period. Employee must live within a reasonable commute to the posted reporting location, not greater than 50 miles one way.
• Perform work in a power plant or office environment.
• Occasional overtime including nights, weekends and holidays if required.
• Exposure to mechanical, electrical, noise or other industrial hazards, and utilize appropriate protective equipment as needed.
• Travel 25-30%
