Abbott Diabetes Care Kilkenny

Abbott Diabetes Care has opened a new site, in Kilkenny, that is  at the forefront of Diabetes care with the latest technology, to manufacture Freestyle blood glucose test strips and Freestyle Sensors for use in diabetes management. Among Abbott Diabetes Care leading brands are the Freestyle Precision, Freestyle Lite and Freestyle Libre systems.

Main purpose of the role

To perform all set up, preparation and testing of sensors via Portal test system so that testing is performed on time, in full meeting all quality and compliance requirements, and in a cost-effective manner to meet the needs of the business & the customer. The role includes performing laboratory duties such as preparing buffers and performing validity testing using specified equipment. The person within the role will perform verifications of their colleagues’ actions and undertake batch record reviews and approvals, to support product batch release. Perform inspections associated with laboratory investigations and / or technical / quality system investigations and generate associated reports. he person will assist in the scheduling and control of testing to ensure all scheduled testing is performed correctly in a timely manner. The role is individually accountable for the quality and efficiency of their own actions whilst performing sensors testing, and via verifications also responsible for the actions of their colleagues.

 To maintain awareness of new/changed products and processes within the area, and to proactively support projects and drive improvements in terms of quality, cost and efficiency.

The person undertaking the role will ensure their actions are compliant with Health and Safety regulations and standards by adhering the sites Health and Safety systems and procedures. Being accountable for the health and safety of themselves and others by highlighting where EHS improvements can be made.

Main responsibilities

• Operate laboratory equipment following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Perform troubleshooting and problem solving online following guidance in SOPs.
• Prepare solutions according to SOP’s, accurately weighing raw materials and performing calculations,
• Perform the associated Inventory Management transactions (i.e. generation of batch numbers and material usage transactions).
• Perform basic engineering functions (i.e. set-up checks and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment) and consistently maintain a high standard of housekeeping.
• Maintain good timekeeping for all tasks and to wear correct working attire and PPE.
• Perform cleaning of glassware and utensils and maintain the laboratory in a clean and fit condition for use
• Ensure sufficient stocks of all laboratory consumables available ready for use.
• Assist in the scheduling and control of testing and making sure all scheduled testing is performed correctly in a timely manner to ensure output targets and schedules are met.
• Perform Out of Specification investigations as per SOP, where applicable.
• Undertake the verification of data and documentation reviews as required.
• To adhere to training policies and procedures; being aware of their, and other Technician training status to ensure it is up to date prior to performing tasks and making sure they remain in compliance within the sites training system.
• Perform training of fellow Technicians.
• To know, understand and adhere to Health and Safety risk assessments applicable to the area.
• Pro-actively prevent/reduce the occurrences of non-conformances within the sensor testing area, and support non-conformance investigations, in addition to any associated corrective and / or preventative actions.
• Support audit readiness for internal and external quality system audits.
• Through role model behaviour, demonstrate full cross functional team support for the department and ancillary functions.
• Communicating details of laboratory activities with line managers and representing workgroup if and when required Ensure that any support functions, such as Engineering Support, or Unit Quality Assurance and Technical Support are notified in a timely manner.
• To always adhere to company policies and procedures and input data accurately into production records.

Qualifications & Experience

• A Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in a relevant science or engineering discipline, or equivalent.
• Experience of working in a laboratory or product test environment and use of a variety of analytical/testing instruments, to provide a general knowledge of laboratory science is preferred.
• Basic computer skills are required to operate Laboratory based computer applications and equipment. 
• Exposure to working in a regulated environment where strict compliance and documentation discipline is preferred.
• Meticulous attention to detail – maintaining accuracy and consistency in high-volume, time-sensitive testing
• Accountability - for both personal actions and verification of colleagues’ work
• Compliance mindset — strict adherence to Quality, GLP & Health & Safety standards
