Summary:

The Residential Medication Technician (RMT) is a specialized direct care member of the multidisciplinary treatment team with a primary focus on safe medication administration and nursing support within the residential program. The RMT functions as the designated medication-responsible staff for their program, working under the oversight of the Program Registered Nurse (RN) and in-house nursing leadership. In addition to medication responsibilities, this role supports residents of varying ages through supervision, daily care, structured activities, and therapeutic engagement.

The RMT helps maintain a safe, supportive, and recovery-focused environment through medication safety, continuous observation, direct interaction, de-escalation support, and role modeling of healthy coping strategies. This position requires skills in medication administration, crisis response, therapeutic interaction, and documentation while contributing to a high-quality continuum of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and administer medications to residents in accordance with Community Based Residential Facility  (CBRF) Medication Management certification standards, the “six rights” of medication safety, and Rogers policy.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for medication-related concerns on the unit, escalating questions, errors, or changes in resident condition to the Program RN or on-site nursing leadership immediately, following the established nursing chain of command.

  • Collaborate with the Program RN on medication reconciliation, documentation accuracy, refill tracking, and PRN administration.

  • Accurately obtain and record vital signs, including orthostatic measurements, as directed by nursing staff prior to or following medication administration.

  • Document medication passes, observations, and relevant resident responses accurately in the medical record in accordance with treatment plan guidelines.

  • Participate in ongoing nursing-led medication competency validation.

  • Provide direct care, supervision, and support to residents, including response to crisis situations and behavioral interventions.

  • Ensure constant awareness of resident whereabouts and safety through active rounding and milieu participation.

  • Conduct safety checks and environmental rounds to maintain compliance with infection control and security standards.

  • Observe and report resident behaviors, meals, and progress to the treatment team in accordance with care plans.

  • Escort residents safely to and from activities, meals, groups, outdoor programming, and appointments as needed.

  • Support admission and discharge procedures, including belongings searches, documentation, and orientation.

  • Encourage and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), promoting independence, dignity, and engagement in recovery-oriented routines.

  • Participate in individual and group therapeutic activities and milieu programming.

  • Maintain current knowledge of departmental protocols and participate in continued learning and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Provide peer support and participate in on-the-job training for new RMTs and MHTs as directed by leadership.

  • This position requires consistent, reliable, and punctual attendance to perform essential functions.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support team effectiveness and care quality.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds

  • Requires effective verbal, written, and auditory communication skills

  • Must be able to perform the physical components of non-violent crisis intervention, including safe physical intervention techniques, in accordance with training and safety protocols.

  • Role requires sustained physical and mental readiness to respond quickly to dynamic or escalating situations within the work environment.

Education & Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required with minimum of six (6) months’ CBRF medication administration experience

OR

High school diploma or equivalent required with minimum of two (2) years’ experience in direct patient care/healthcare related field

OR

Bachelor’s degree (preferably in healthcare/human services)

All Levels:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Staff assigned to Adolescent Units must be at least two (2) years older than the oldest resident.

  • Valid WI driver’s license in good standing (non-probationary) required.

  • The following are required for the role (formal training will be provided):

    • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross), includes CPR certification

    • Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI)

    • Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF) training (if applicable)

    • Completion of a 160-hour Supervised Traineeship Program

    • Medication Administration Certification
