Job Description Summary

GE Aerospace is seeking a skilled, hands-on Engineering Test Technician to join our engineering laboratory team in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This role supports the testing, troubleshooting, repair, and validation of aerospace electronic products and test equipment. You will work closely with design engineering teams to resolve hardware issues, verify performance against drawings and specifications, and help ensure reliable, high-quality products for aerospace applications.

Job Description

The Engineering Test Technician will perform product testing and debug at both the complete-unit (“black box”) and circuit card assembly (CCA) levels. This individual will troubleshoot analog, digital, and microprocessor-based circuits; build, repair, and maintain test equipment; and support test-station setup and calibration.

This is a highly hands-on engineering lab role requiring strong electronics troubleshooting, soldering, component-level repair, and test-equipment experience. The successful candidate can work independently, document findings clearly, and collaborate effectively with design engineering and cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform functional, diagnostic, and verification testing on electronic products, CCAs, and complete units against engineering drawings, specifications, and test procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and debug analog, digital, and microprocessor-based circuits at the component, board, unit, and test-station levels.
  • Perform soldering, desoldering, assembly, disassembly, modification, and repair of electronic hardware and test equipment; maintain applicable solder certification.
  • Conduct component testing and evaluation on electrical devices while meeting defined schedule and budget requirements.
  • Build, check out, set up, calibrate, and maintain test equipment, fixtures, and test stations.
  • Partner with design engineers to identify root causes, resolve failures, validate corrective actions, and improve product quality.
  • Use Windows-based tools and lower-level programming interfaces as needed; JTAG programming experience is beneficial.
  • Support lab computer, network, and IT security setup activities as required.
  • Document test results, failures, repairs, and technical findings accurately and clearly.
  • Follow applicable safety, quality, compliance, and export-control requirements.

Basic Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering/Electronics Technology, an Electronic Technician certificate, or a high school diploma/GED with at least 5 years of related electronics testing experience or relevant military experience.
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in an engineering lab, electronics test, product test, avionics, military electronics, or similar technical environment.
  • Demonstrated experience testing and troubleshooting analog, digital, and microprocessor-based electronic circuits.
  • Hands-on soldering, rework, and electronic assembly/disassembly experience.
  • Experience performing product test and debug at the circuit board/CCA and/or complete-unit level.
  • Experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • Test equipment build, checkout, setup, or calibration
    • Windows software and lower-level programming
    • JTAG programming
    • Computer and network setup
    • IT security in a lab or test environment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must qualify as a U.S. person under applicable export-control regulations.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen, if applicable.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with JTAG programming and hardware programming/debug tools.
  • Experience performing Destructive Physical Analysis (DPA).
  • Exposure to materials science, chemistry, mechanical engineering, or electronics failure-analysis processes.
  • Experience with cross-sectioning, fracture/failure analysis, reliability assessment, hazardous-material analysis, material composition analysis, or alternate-part recommendations.
  • Knowledge of current material technologies, manufacturing processes, and relevant industry standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and root-cause-analysis skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-learning ability, and a continuous-improvement mindset.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced electronics test professional who enjoys working directly with hardware in a fast-paced engineering lab. They can confidently use test equipment, interpret drawings and schematics, diagnose difficult electronic failures, and complete board-level repair and soldering work with precision.

They bring a strong foundation in analog, digital, and microprocessor circuit troubleshooting, along with practical experience supporting test stations and engineering prototypes or production hardware. They are detail-oriented, organized, capable of working independently, and comfortable partnering with design engineers to move issues from failure identification through root cause and resolution.
