- Emergency Medicine Consultant (FACEM)
- Location: Darwin, Northern Territory
- Employment: Full-time, permanent
- Practise tertiary emergency medicine at the top of Australia
We're seeking an Emergency Medicine Consultant to join the emergency department of a major tertiary referral hospital in Darwin. This is a rare chance to work in a high-acuity, nationally unique ED while enjoying a relaxed tropical lifestyle.
About the Hospital and Department
- The tertiary referral centre for the north-west of Australia, serving some of the most remote communities on earth across a catchment of over 1 million square kilometres
- About 70,000 emergency presentations a year, around 25% of them paediatric
- A large, well-established team of about 36 Emergency Medicine Consultants and 200 Emergency Nurses, with a 24-hour registrar presence
- Two modern EDs (the main tertiary hospital and a sister regional hospital nearby), with 24-hour access to all investigations, including two ED-based CT scanners
- ACEM-accredited as a Major Referral centre for the maximum 36 months of training, including paediatric and TS4 accreditation
A case mix you won't see anywhere else
The patient population is young, with a median age of 32. The region has Australia's highest per capita rates of acute rheumatic fever, TB, and blunt and penetrating trauma. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients account for about 30% of ED presentations and 50% of hospital admissions, giving consultants meaningful work in Indigenous health and close links with remote retrieval services.
About the Role
- Provide senior clinical leadership and decision-making in a busy tertiary ED
- Supervise and teach registrars, residents and medical students, including through the department's weekly protected teaching program (workshops, high-fidelity simulation, ultrasound teaching and exam preparation)
- Contribute to trauma care, retrieval coordination, quality improvement and departmental development
- Optional involvement in education, research and leadership roles
About You
- Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM), with eligibility for specialist registration with AHPRA
- A commitment to culturally safe care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients
- Strong teaching, leadership and teamwork skills
- A sense of adventure and enthusiasm for a unique tropical lifestyle
Benefits
- Attractive senior medical remuneration under the NT public sector medical officers' agreement
- Professional development allowance and leave
- Relocation assistance
- Salary packaging (subject to eligibility)
- Access to courses such as APLS, ALS, MIMMS and Australian Trauma Team Training
