TITLE: Embedded Software Engineer (C / EMBEDDED LINUX / FPGA SYSTEMS)
LOCATION: Luxembourg
ABOUT THE ROLE
ispace Europe is looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to develop software for lunar rover systems. The software will run directly on embedded computers and electronic hardware used by the rover.
This is a hands-on embedded software role. You will write C code, work with embedded Linux, connect software to electronic hardware, and test the software on real devices. You will work closely with FPGA, electronics, systems, and test engineers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop reliable, embedded software for lunar rover systems.
- Write, review, debug, and maintain C software for embedded devices, rover subsystems, and hardware interfaces.
- Develop and integrate software on embedded Linux, including threads, processes, communication between processes, synchronization, and Linux system interfaces.
- Define clear software requirements, designs, interfaces, and development plans.
- Work with FPGA, electronics, avionics, systems, mechanical, and test engineers to connect software with hardware and solve system problems.
- Create and run unit, integration, functional, verification, and validation tests.
- Debug problems on real hardware, find the root cause, fix the software, and verify the solution.
- Identify software risks early and help reduce them.
- Write and maintain clear requirements, designs, interface documents, test procedures, and test reports.
- Improve coding standards, development tools, automation, testing, and software quality.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS - MUST HAVE
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems or equivalent professional experience.
- At least 5 years of professional software development experience, including substantial embedded software work.
- Professional experience writing and debugging C software that runs on embedded devices. This is essential.
- Strong hands-on experience with embedded Linux application development and operation. This is required.
- Experience testing and debugging software on real electronic hardware.
- Experience with threads, concurrent programming, communication between processes, synchronization, and Linux system interfaces.
- Experience with requirements, design, implementation, code review, testing, integration, and verification.
- Experience using version control, code review, build, and issue-tracking tools.
- Understanding how software choices affect processors, memory, timing, interfaces, and the wider system.
- Clear written and spoken English and the ability to work effectively with hardware and multidisciplinary teams.
STRONGLY PREFERRED - FPGA AND RELATED EXPERIENCE
- FPGA knowledge or experience integrating software with FPGA-based systems. Candidates with this experience will be given a strong preference.
- Experience working with FPGA register maps, memory-mapped interfaces, interrupts, DMA, and hardware/software integration tests.
- Experience with FPGA configuration/development tools.
- Embedded Linux kernel configuration, build systems, boot process, device tree, or Linux driver development.
- Experience with real-time or resource-limited systems.
- Experience with I2C, UART, SPI, CAN, Ethernet, or TCP/UDP/IP.
- Board bring-up and laboratory debugging using tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
- Experience in space, aerospace, robotics, automotive, industrial, or other high-reliability engineering field.
- Experience with GitLab, Atlassian tools, CI/CD, automated builds, and automated testing.
