SUMMARY

Works as a lead electrician at Charlotte Douglas International Airport primarily performing high level work installing wiring, plugs, cabling, lights and switches; locating and repairing malfunctions in electrical circuits/equipment; inspecting, servicing, testing, performing PM’s and repairing systems. Performs other general maintenance work incidental to above duties as necessary to keep buildings in working order, including basic HVAC and plumbing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Installation, preventive maintenance, and repair of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Provide lead direction and training to other employees while working in field.
  • General building maintenance work incidental to above duties or necessary to keep buildings in working order.
  • Compile lists of equipment, tools and supplies needed.
  • Operate cars, vans, bucket trucks and other heavy equipment.
  • Inspects assigned Airport construction projects. Coordinates work with contracted construction inspectors and tenants.
  • Extensive knowledge of other airport systems including HVAC, plumbing, generators, data emergency systems, aircraft fueling systems and electrical vehicle chargers.
  • Work as acting supervisor when needed.
  • Subject to emergency call back for equipment repairs and inclement weather.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Act as supervisor in the absence of Chief Maintenance Mechanic
  • Often senior electrician on the job site

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma (or GED equivalent)
  • Five years of related experience
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

 

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • State Issued Drivers License
  • North Carolina State Electrical License

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Thorough knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems including cabling and communications wiring.
  • North Carolina Electrical Code and building codes



Skill in:

  • Skills to perform journey level work on electrical/mechanical systems. 
  • Skills to read and write sufficiently to complete paperwork and read schematic designs and blueprints.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Skills to calculate cost estimates and measure items.

Ability to:

  • Ability to perform journey level work on electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Read and write sufficiently to complete paperwork and read schematic designs and blueprints.
  • Lead others on the job site and act as leader in the field
  • Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors and tenants, representing the airport in a professional manner.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Complete computer based Work Orders and notes

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS  


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Spends about 70% of the time standing, bending, reaching, walking and driving. The rest of the time includes a combination of sitting, twisting, keeling, squatting, crawling, lifting, shoveling and carrying. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs. About 5% of time can lift, pull or carry up to 100 lbs a short distance, with another person.
  • Works inside and outside. May include exposure to machinery, dust, chemicals, fumes, solvents, moving objects/vehicles, scaffolding, ladders, vibrating tools, excessive noise, large crowds and slippery or uneven surfaces. Uses a variety of electrical and hand tools. 

ADA and Other Requirements

Positions in this class typically require grasping, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. 


Physical Requirements:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking extended periods of time
  • Moderate to Heavy lifting and carrying; regular crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required 

Sensory Requirements:

  • Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (touch, visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for mechanical work
  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain
  • Comprehensive of written information in work related documents
  • Ability to hear, understand and distinguish speech undefined

General Information:
•    Standard shift hours apply.  Hours subject to change and overtime.  Works assigned shift, subject to emergency call back to work during emergencies, urgent situations, special events and inclement weather. 
•    Valid driver’s license with no more than 6 points and the ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit.
•    Certain criminal convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.
