Job Description:

The Kansas Health Science Center (KHSU)-Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM) has a 22,000squarefoot Simulation Center that features two highfunctioning simulation labs, inpatient and outpatient wings, highfidelity manikins, task trainers, and virtual/augmentedreality classroom, all designed to deliver immersive, interprofessional learning experiences.

The Director of Simulation leads the strategic and operational oversight of simulation-based education at KansasCOM. This role includes managing simulation activities, collaborating with faculty to create high-impact educational experiences, overseeing simulation center operations and standardized patient (SP) programs, and contributing to scholarship and service that advances the mission of the University.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching 30%

  • Collaboratively develop and facilitate delivery of simulation-based educational and assessment experiences for students.
  • Collaborate with faculty to design, implement, and evaluate standardized patient encounters.
  • Support integration of simulation into the preclinical and clinical curricula in alignment with program learning outcomes.
  • Lead simulation debriefing sessions to reinforce learning objectives using evidence-based strategies.
  • Assist faculty in utilizing simulation software, manikins, and AV tools to enhance instructional delivery.
  • Develop and maintain a repository of simulation scenarios, SP cases, and associated teaching materials.
  • Support faculty development and training in simulation best practices, including prebriefing and debriefing strategies.

Research and Scholarly Activity 10%

  • Contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning through simulation-related presentations, publications, and research.
  • Support faculty and staff in the development of simulation-related educational research or quality improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current with innovations, standards, and emerging trends in simulation-based education.
  • Participate in regional and national simulation organizations to promote KansasCOM's visibility in simulation education.

Administration 50%

  • Provide day-to-day oversight of Simulation Center operations, including scheduling, staffing, and resource management.
  • Oversee maintenance and procurement of simulation equipment, mannequins, software, and AV systems.
  • Assist in the development of the Simulation Center budget, including forecasting, purchasing, and vendor relationships.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and safety protocols for Simulation Center operations.
  • Coordinate cleaning, repair, and preventive maintenance protocols for equipment and learning spaces.
  • Ensure compliance with national standards and institutional accreditation requirements (AOA/COCA).
  • Develop schedules and utilize simulation management software and online tools for sessions, trainings, and assessments.
  • Foster collaboration across departments and with external stakeholders to expand simulation offerings and partnerships.
  • Recruit, train, and schedule standardized patients in collaboration with faculty and staff.

Service 10%

  • Foster a positive culture and inclusive learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Serve on selected committees at the discretion of the Dean to support institutional goals.
  • Support university accreditation and quality assurance processes related to simulation education.
  • Serve as a key representative of the Simulation Center by coordinating and conducting tours for prospective students, faculty, donors, accreditors, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with continuing education programs and interprofessional training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties assigned in support of KansasCOM’s mission..

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Good standing with all regulatory and governmental boards and agencies.
  • Master’s degree in a healthcare-related or education field (required); terminal degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in healthcare simulation in an academic setting.
  • Experience with simulation best practices, equipment, and standardized patient management.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with simulation budget management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) or equivalent credential.
  • Clinical experience as a licensed healthcare professional (e.g., RN, NP, PA, DO, MD).
  • Knowledge of Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and INACSL standards.
  • Experience working in osteopathic medical education or interprofessional education environments.
  • Familiarity with AOA/COCA accreditation requirements.
