About the Team

The Finance team at Patreon ensures the business runs efficiently, compliantly, and with integrity as we continue to scale globally. Our Tax team owns Patreon's global tax obligations end to end, partnering closely with Product, Engineering, and the rest of Finance to build scalable processes that keep pace with a fast-growing, international creator platform.

About the Role

The Director, Indirect Tax is responsible for all indirect taxes across all aspects of the business. Think marketplace sales taxes, ESS, VAT, GST, JCT, etc. This role will be very hands-on and play an integral part in all aspects of tax operations, from collections through remittance. As a Director, you will work closely with Product and Engineering teams as well as the Finance team, to scope, design, and enhance the way our product handles indirect taxes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Join a small but mighty tax team guiding a fast-growing, world-class Creator-oriented company.

• Be our expert on all things indirect tax.

• Lead the preparation of indirect tax returns as well as supporting calculations, work-papers, and payments, ensuring all external deadlines are met.

• Be able to clearly explain our tax obligations to internal and external stakeholders, and help build a path towards full compliance with those obligations.

• Act as a first point of contact for organization and Creator/Patron tax queries. Help develop resources to allow Patrons and Creators to understand and comply with tax obligations across the world. Do the best we can to demystify what should be a pain-free and straightforward process.

• Keep abreast of legislative updates and initiate changes on our platform to ensure compliance.

• Manage tax controversies, including providing response to various information document requests from tax authorities, coordinate with local tax advisors on reviews, strategize the audit plan and quantify tax/reserve impact to financial statements.

• Prepare monthly account reconciliations and reporting schedules, providing commentary and variance analysis.

• Work closely with management and external auditors to ensure the company is compliant with the latest accounting guidance, FAS 5 reserves and SOX.

• Research and analysis identifying and exploring indirect tax opportunities and exposures related to global footprint expansion, systems and controls, refunds and cash flow management and projections.

• Be curious. Have a desire to innovate on behalf of Creators worldwide.

About You

• 10–12+ years experience in indirect tax.

• Intimate knowledge of VAT/GST and similar transaction taxes.

• Prior experience with electronically supplied service providers and marketplace providers.

• Strong experience and knowledge in U.S. GAAP, FAS 5, and internal controls.

• Experience with informational reporting (Forms 1099, 5471, etc.).

• Direct prior experience with interpretation and application of developing law.

• Proven success in tax controversy management and settlement.

• Previous experience performing tax research and providing technical advice on U.S. state and international tax issues.

• Self-starter, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and responsibilities.

• Team leader, able to shepherd projects from beginning to end.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

• Detail-oriented and able to effectively organize and manage multiple responsibilities.

• High level of honesty, integrity, commitment, and responsibility to day-to-day work.

• Superior written and verbal communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills.

• Experience with NetSuite; outsourced sales tax providers a plus.

• Team player, with a positive attitude, who is pro-active and owns accountability.

The posted salary range is dependent on the location and the level. This range may encompass multiple levels within the role’s job family. The final offer will be based on candidate’s experience, skills, competencies, and geographic location, aligning with the appropriate job level within Patreon’s leveling framework. For remote employees located outside CA and NY, salary may vary based on location and local market conditions.
