Job Description Summary:

The Director, Career Advising & Education, in collaboration with the Graduate Career Management Center (GCMC) team at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business at William & Mary, develops and implements short- and long-range goals, objectives, and strategies relating to the career and professional development of graduate students and alumni. The incumbent manages and delivers career management workshops in collaboration with GCMC staff and outside experts; develops, implements, and manages targeted career events, develops materials and resources necessary to support career development; manages multifaceted relationships with staff, faculty, alumni, and students; provides career coaching to individuals and groups. The Director may be asked to take an active role in select local, regional, or national professional associations and organizations to support the career advancement of all Mason School of Business graduate students, and to continue building and enhancing the reputation of the Mason School of Business and the Graduate Programs in the hiring community.

Job Description:

  • Graduate degree in Business, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling or related field or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Significant (10+) graduate career management experience and/or corporate experience in managing career development programs, industry and hiring trends, understanding of career advising/coaching frameworks, employer relations, and networking.
  • Team Management: Experience managing and motivating a team in a service-oriented environment.
  • Data Gathering & Reporting: Ability to lead/oversee the consistent gathering, analysis and reporting of data on graduate student engagement, satisfaction and career outcomes. Skill in ensuring the integrity of data, consistent with standards.
  • Course Management/Teaching: Experience leading and revising career relevant curriculum, developing graduate level workshops, and leading/facilitating courses/classroom discussions.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver programs on the job search process/preparation, skill-building and professional development.
  • Customer service: Ability to apply the highest level of customer service to teach content, counsel students, and engage with alumni, faculty, staff, guest speakers.
  • Project Management: project management skills, and the ability to prioritize/multi-task in a fast-paced environment and manage/direct priorities. Strong organizational and time management.
  • Communications skills: Possesses strong interpersonal skills and organizational abilities.
  • Communicates clearly, accurately, and professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Technical Skills: proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Zoom; Teams; LinkedIn or similar platforms; ability to learn new technologies including career management platforms; strong skills in data analysis.

  • Significant history of career coaching and/or recruiting students.
  • Certified career coach, or other industry relevant certification (SPHR, PMP, etc.).
  • Understanding of the impact that external rankings (including career outcomes) on Business School and ultimately student success
  • Systems thinker who enjoys collaboration.

Conditions of Employment: 

  • This position requires additional hours beyond the typical work week, to include occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours with occasional travel.
  • Ability to work additional hours as needed during special events, projects, evening programs and data reporting periods.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive data.

Posting Range: $75,000 up to $110,000 commensurate with experience

Duties: 

30%- Team Management & Leadership:

  • Directly supervise team of professional career advisors and graduate assistants (as needed), and partner with GCMC colleagues on contributing towards a positive, team-oriented culture.
  • Ensure that expectations of team members are clear, well communicated, and are consistent in the goals and objectives of the department or unit.
  • In collaboration with Associate Dean, the Senior Director of Corporate & Employer Relations, the Director of Online Graduate Career Services and appropriate GCMC/Mason School colleagues, set annual office goals and objectives.
  • Meet the requirements of the HR performance evaluation system and ensure that evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation (providing both positive and constructive feedback).
  • Work with Associate Dean to develop policies and procedures for use of office services.
  • Ensure that any safety issues are reviewed to ensure a healthy workplace.
  • Help ensure that team members have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals.
  • Determine the appropriate allocation of workload to team members, keeping in mind skills, interests, staffing levels and the needs of those we serve.
  • Provide equitable access to professional development opportunities in line with staff development plans and any budgetary allowances.

25%- Career Advising & Education:

  • Serve as and lead team of career advisors to graduate students/alumni by fostering job search and professional development skills and otherwise maximizing chances of seeking student obtaining internships and/or permanent positions.
  • Develop, revise, and deliver career relevant curriculum (including teaching the Charting Your MBA Career course), graduate level workshops, and lead/facilitate courses/classroom discussions.
  • Lead the effort to design, develop and execute services for students, including individual advising, workshops, events and other electronic and hard-copy resources.
  • In collaboration with Associate Dean and Director of Online Graduate Career Services, determine when programming/services could be relevant to both residential and online students to enhance services for both populations and avoid redundancies.
  • Advise and support students during each phase of the job search process from career exploration, developing industry/function knowledge, personal marketing plan (resume, cover letter, LinkedIn, etc.), networking, interviewing, offer negotiations, etc. Guide students on development of short- and long-term career strategy action plan.
  • Advise students seeking to change careers and assist them with transferring current skills to new career opportunities.
  • Administer and provide relevant career assessment (e.g., CareerLeader), assist students with developing self-awareness, identify potential career matches and establish clear career objectives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the employment market, recruiting trends, and hiring practices for target companies and industries.

25%- Program & Data Management:

  • Develop, manage and implement select career events, workshops and programs to educate graduate students and alumni on all aspects of career management and the job search process, preparing them to secure full-time roles and internship opportunities.
  • Lead/oversee (in collaboration with relevant Mason School/GCMC colleagues) the gathering, management, analysis and reporting of aggregate data on student engagement, satisfaction and employment outcomes. Ensure the integrity of data and compliance with CSEA standards.
  • Implement innovative career programming to enhance student career readiness (e.g., pre- enrollment admissions events, summer career readiness programming, orientation presentations, and professional development co-curricular programming).
  • Communicate regularly with GCMC staff and update team on career programming, and outcome related trends and successes.
  • Help ensure the quality/consistency of GCMC communications to external audiences.
  • Evaluate programs and services using surveys and other methods; recommend changes to increase quality of service — striving for continuous improvement.
  • Recommend suggestions for program enhancements for consideration and work to integrate technology as needed.

10%- Corporate & Employer Relations:

  • In partnership with the Employer Engagement team, assist in fostering a strong positive relationship with employers, including assisting with hosting employers for on-campus recruiting events, interviews and information sessions.
  • Enhance student employment outcomes through proactive engagement with employers/alumni to encourage their recruiting activity at W&M and refer seeking graduates their way.
  • Gather & share data with the Employer Engagement team on current students’ employer/ industry interests, geographic preferences and other relevant info to inform employer outreach efforts.
  • Participate in occasional relationship building meetings and events with corporate recruiters, alumni and human resources professionals to discuss hiring needs.
  • Communicate timely, relevant recruiting information to students, GCMC staff and others as appropriate.
  • Represent the GCMC at select events and relevant career services oriented professional conferences, as needed.

 

10%- School Leadership & Special Projects:

  • In partnership with GCMC colleagues, maintain an active role as a liaison to Mason School organizations that are relevant to assigned student audience(s) –this could include Programs Office, Admissions, and others.
  • Actively participate in cross-functional project teams as assigned (i.e. search committees, joint projects and other initiatives) with peers and other Mason program offices.
  • Serve as a key liaison with leaders of Mason School graduate programs to identify and address student needs.
  • Complete other special projects for the GCMC, Mason School and/or William & Mary as assigned by the Associate Dean.
