We're making a significant investment in our Care Sector team and are looking for two commercially minded Development Underwriters to help drive the next phase of growth.

This is not a traditional desk-based underwriting role. We're looking for individuals who thrive in the market, enjoy building relationships, spotting opportunities and creating growth. You'll combine your underwriting expertise with a highly broker-facing approach, developing new business opportunities while helping strengthen Markel's position as one of the UK's leading specialist insurers in the care sector.

With over 15,000 policyholders and a strong reputation in specialist care, this is an opportunity to join a successful, growing team where your impact will be visible from day one.

Why This Role?

 

We're creating this position to expand our market presence and build new broker relationships across key growth regions. This role will focus on either London & the South East, Birmingham Leeds or Manchester although we're keen to hear from exceptional candidates in other locations.

 

You'll have the freedom and autonomy to develop your territory, build your profile within the market and influence the future direction of our Care portfolio.

What You'll Be Doing:

 

Grow Market Presence:

·       Build and strengthen relationships with brokers across your territory

·       Identify and win new business opportunities

·       Increase awareness of the Markel proposition within the care market

·       Represent Markel at broker meetings, industry events and networking opportunities

 

Deliver Profitable Growth:

·       Underwrite and negotiate new business risks within authority

·       Develop and manage a strong pipeline of opportunities

·       Drive sustainable portfolio growth while maintaining underwriting discipline

·       Contribute to a significant annual new business target

 

Influence and Collaborate:

·       Work closely with underwriting, distribution and operational teams

·       Share market insight and broker intelligence

·       Support the development of Markel's Care proposition

·       Act as a trusted business partner to brokers and internal stakeholders

 

About Our Care Portfolio:

 

Our Care team specialises in organisations that support vulnerable people and children across the UK, including:

 

·       Learning disability providers

·       Mental health services

·       Children's care organisations

·       Residential care providers

·       Charities and not-for-profit organisations

·       Specialist care businesses

 

This is a highly specialist market where Markel has a well-established reputation and strong competitive position.

 

What We're Looking For:

 

You'll likely come from a background in:

 

·       Development Underwriting

·       Commercial Underwriting

·       Care Sector Underwriting

·       Specialist Insurance

·       Broker Development

 

Most importantly, you'll be someone who enjoys creating opportunities and building meaningful broker relationships.

 

You'll bring:

·       Commercial underwriting experience within the care / social welfare sector

·       Experience working with brokers and developing accounts

·       Strong relationship-building and networking skills

·       A proven track record of generating new business

·       A proactive, self-starting mindset

·       Confidence working autonomously across a large territory

·       Strong negotiation and trading skills

·       Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills

 

Care sector experience would be advantageous, but we are equally interested in people with the right commercial approach, growth mindset and ambition to succeed.
