The Cytotechnologist examines gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens microscopically, identifies and marks abnormal cells, and renders accurate interpretations. This position provides final interpretation for negative gynecologic specimens in accordance with CLIA regulations and performs preliminary evaluation of abnormal and non-gynecologic specimens for pathologist review, including on-site adequacy assessment during fine needle aspiration procedures. The Cytotechnologist works under the general direction of a Pathologist and supports quality and regulatory standards within the laboratory.

Essential Job Statements

Screen and evaluate any gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens to detect abnormalities.

Prepare and stain slides for microscopic evaluation. Perform microscopic evaluation of cytological specimens following laboratory procedures and policies.

Consult with pathologists to review complex or atypical cases.

Maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accurate test results.

Meet slide screening productivity standards in accordance with laboratory and regulatory guidelines (e.g., CLIA workload limits).

Provides on-site cytologic evaluation (ROSE) for fine needle aspiration procedures including EBUS, ultrasound-guided, and other interventional procedures; communicates adequacy assessment to proceduralists in real time.

Mandatory Testing: following the CLIA regulations, must participate in the legally mandated annual, CMS-approved Cytology Proficiency Testing (PT) event with a score of > to 90 % continue examining slides.

Assists in educating and training laboratory personnel, students, and residents.

Ensures the laboratory is maintaining accreditation standards from College of American Pathologist (CAP), Joint Commission (TJC) and other accrediting agency standards as required.

Perform other duties as assigned

Patient Population: Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor Degree in Health Science (Cytotechnology Track)

Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in Cytotechnology or Clinical Lab Science from an accredited program

Licensing/ Certification

Licensure/Certification Required: Certified as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. New Graduates must obtain certification within 6-months of hire

Licensure/Certification Preferred: Current CT (ASCP)

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Must pass slide screening requirements and annual CAP proficiency test. Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Experience PREFERRED: One (1) year of clinical work experience as a Cytotechnologist

Working Conditions: Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. Compensation Range

$33.01 - $51.17

Actual salary offers will be based on several key factors to include relevant work experience, credentials, and qualifications.
