The Role

Join GM’s Customer Literature team and play a meaningful role in delivering accurate, clear, and customer-focused information that reaches millions of vehicle owners worldwide. As a Technical Writer, you will author and manage owner’s manual content within GM’s content management system, collaborating cross-functionally with engineering, marketing, legal, and safety teams to review details before providing to the customer. You will exercise independent judgment in identifying and resolving content issues, proposing process improvements, and driving quality across the full content lifecycle. This role offers the opportunity to work on exciting global vehicle programs and contribute directly to GM’s mission of ensuring customers have the information they need, when they need it.

What You’ll Do

• Develop, author, and proofread customer literature (owner’s manual) content, managing the full authoring cycle within GM’s content management system
• Research technical product information and collaborate directly with engineering subject matter experts to ensure accuracy of vehicle-specific content
• Partner with safety, legal, and regulatory coordinator to identify and incorporate required text; coordinate with proofers/editors to ensure alignment with GM’s global writing style guidelines
• Perform on-vehicle and bench validations to verify content accuracy and review findings with engineering and the customer literature team
• Identify and correct non-routine problems in existing content, systems, and processes through independent judgment; propose and lead process improvement initiatives to reduce authoring effort and improve quality and consistency
• Assist in onboarding and training new team members; keep training documentation current as processes evolve
• Maintain business records and documentation per GM record retention policy, and complete all assigned work in accordance with established production schedules

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or a related field or equivalent technical experience
• 2+ years of technical writing experience with a strong command of the English language and the ability to communicate complex subject matter clearly, both orally and in writing
• Demonstrated ability to work with general supervision, exercising independent judgment and decision-making to identify and propose solutions on significant content matters
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities without direct oversight
• Proven time management skills with the ability to deliver in a production-based environment with strict deadlines
• Comfort using AI-enabled tools to improve the efficiency, quality, and effectiveness of day-to-day work while maintaining strong human judgment
• Ability to learn and adapt to new technology platforms, including Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive), as well as content management and authoring tools
• Self-starter with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in both virtual and in-person environments
• Demonstrated commitment to GM’s cultural behaviors with the ability to navigate a diverse global environment

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

• Automotive knowledge or experience authoring automotive-related customer literature
• XML or DITA authoring experience, including structured content modeling and content reuse
• Project management experience
• Experience with enterprise content management systems
• Familiarity with safety, legal, and regulatory requirements (e.g., FMVSS)
