Job Description:

PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Curator of Academic Programs and Collections supports teaching, learning, and community engagement through the Scripps College collections managed by the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery. Reporting to the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Director, the Curator works with faculty and Gallery staff to integrate the collections into courses, support research and teaching, and teach classes. The Curator also develops, manages, and implements initiatives that engage faculty, students, and the community, provide student mentorship and professional development, and position the Gallery and collections as a community resource. Additionally, the Curator researches the Scripps College collections, guides their long‑term growth, and contributes to their care.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Teaching, Learning, and Engagement

  • Work with faculty, students, and staff to incorporate collections, exhibitions, and programs into teaching and learning across the curriculum.

  • Collaborate with Gallery staff to develop and maintain standards, workflows, policies, and procedures for teaching, research, and collection use.

  • Plan and manage class visits and teach from the collections.

  • Give tours of the Gallery, exhibitions, collections, and public art on campus.

  • Develop programs, exhibitions, publications, and other initiatives that support the curriculum and engage the community.

  • Manage internship and work-study programs, including hiring, scheduling, and working with supervisors, in collaboration with staff.

  • Supervise and mentor interns and students in curation, museum education, collections management, programming, and related areas.

 

Collections, Research, and Curation

  • Collaborate with Gallery staff and other stakeholders to research, develop, and care for the collections.

  • Research, propose, review, and facilitate acquisitions and deaccessions.

  • Curate or co-curate exhibitions in collaboration with Gallery staff and other partners.

Campus and External Relations

  • Manage online communications to promote Gallery initiatives, share information and resources, and expand audience reach and engagement.

  • Develop and manage Gallery student organizations.

  • Build and maintain relationships with students, campus groups, faculty, alumni, and community partners.

  • Build relationships with potential donors to support internships and other Gallery initiatives.

  • Work with Gallery staff on fundraising, including donor relations, grant writing, and grant administration.

  • Provide operational support for Gallery events as needed.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in curation, collections management, and teaching.

  • Strong research, writing, and oral presentation skills.

  • Experience in curation, museum education, arts programming, or collections management.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for a deadline-oriented, creative, and academic environment.

  • Ability to interact well with a variety of diverse constituents, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the general public.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and advance multiple concurrent projects, balancing short‑term deadlines with long‑term goals.

  • Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Institutional Values in the performance of job duties.

 

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in art, art history, museum studies, curatorial studies, or related field, with five years of experience in curation, museum education, arts programming, or collections management, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience.

 

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a regular status, full-time, benefits-eligible, non-exempt position.

 

Work on evenings and weekends will be required on occasion to support special events.

 

The regular hours of this position are 8:00 am-5:00 pm Monday-Friday. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or the department, including some over-time and weekends as needed.

 

Hourly rate range: $30.00-$33.25. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises student employees.

Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. 

 

Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.  Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.  Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters.  Ability to hear within normal parameters.  Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file.  Ability to move about.  Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.
