What We Need
We are seeking a Controller to own the accounting function for a fast-growing, private equity-backed SaaS business at approximately $100M in ARR. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who has operated in a PE portfolio company environment and understands the discipline, speed, and rigor that sponsors expect — while also building scalable processes to support continued growth (including potential future exit or add-on M&A activity). The Controller will lead all core accounting operations, drive the monthly close, own technical accounting and SaaS-specific revenue recognition, manage external audit and banking relationships, and serve as a key partner to the CFO on financial reporting, controls, and board/sponsor reporting.
What You'll Do
- Financial Close & Reporting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process; drive continuous improvement to reduce close timeline (target: 5–7 business days)
- Prepare and review consolidated financial statements in accordance with US GAAP
- Deliver accurate, timely reporting packages for the CFO, PE sponsor, and board of directors
- Technical Accounting & Revenue
- Serve as the technical accounting authority, particularly ASC 606 revenue recognition for multi-element SaaS arrangements (subscription, usage-based, professional services, multi-year contracts)
- Own accounting for capitalized software development costs (ASC 350-40), stock-based compensation, leases (ASC 842), and business combinations as needed
- Draft technical accounting memos for non-routine transactions and maintain the accounting policy manual
- Controls & Compliance
- Design, implement, and maintain a scalable internal controls environment appropriate for a PE-owned company preparing for potential future audit rigor (SOX-readiness a plus)
- Own the annual audit relationship end-to-end; manage the external audit firm, PBC lists, and timeline
- Ensure compliance with multi-state sales tax, franchise tax, and other indirect tax obligations common to SaaS businesses
- Systems & Process
- Drive ERP and accounting systems strategy (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct); own subledger integrations with billing/CRM/revenue recognition tools
- Build and document scalable processes and controls that support the company's growth trajectory and PE reporting cadence
- Treasury & Banking
- Manage day-to-day banking relationships, debt covenant compliance and reporting, and cash management
- Support due diligence workstreams for potential financing events, add-on acquisitions, or a future sale process
- Leadership
- Build, mentor, and scale the accounting team as the company grows
- Act as a thought partner to the CFO on capital structure, reporting cadence, and sponsor communications
What You Bring
- 10–15+ years progressive accounting/finance experience, including prior VP Controller, Controller, or Assistant Controller experience at a SaaS or subscription-based company
- Prior experience in a PE-owned or PE-backed portfolio company strongly preferred; comfort with sponsor reporting requirements and pace
- CPA required; public accounting background (Big 4 or national firm) strongly preferred
- Deep, hands-on expertise in ASC 606 revenue recognition for SaaS/subscription models
- Experience leading external audits and building SOX-ready or audit-ready control environments
- Strong systems background (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar mid-market ERP); experience with rev rec tools (e.g., Zuora, Chargebee, Maxio) a plus
- Track record of scaling accounting processes and teams through periods of rapid growth
- Excellent communication skills; comfortable presenting to the CFO, board, and PE sponsor
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; MBA a plus but not required
- Manual Dexterity: Repetitive motion of wrists, hands and fingers for using a computer.
- Stationary Tasks: Sitting for extended periods, remaining in a stationary position.
